Call for Proposals – Fragebogenfragen & Survey Experimente (ENHANCE-Panelstudie)

Wir laden hierzu herzlich Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen wie Soziologie, Psychologie, Philosophie, Medizin und Politikwissenschaften ein, um Instrumente für unsere Panel-Studie (Welle 4) einzureichen.

Darin geht es unter anderem um Strategien der Leistungssteigerung (mit verschreibungspflichtigen Medikamenten, Koffeintabletten, Brain-Computer-Interfaces, etc.), persönliche Eigenschaften (z. B. Selbstkontrolle, moralische Bewertungen, wahrgenommener Stress), kontextuelle Faktoren, wie Arbeitsplatzmerkmale (z. B. arbeitsplatzbezogene Stressoren, Arbeitszeiten, Wettbewerbsklima) oder soziale Einflüsse (z. B. soziale Unterstützung, deskriptive Normen).

Abstract:

This vignette-based study examined the willingness to feign symptoms to obtain a prescription following an analysis on who might use prescription stimulants to enhance performance (N = 3,468). It experimentally manipulated three factors: the social disapproval of prescription stimulant use for enhancement purposes, the physicians’ diagnostic efforts, and the medical condition (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy); respondent characteristics of self-control, personal morality, and self-efficacy were also measured. Our results showed that social disapproval of prescription drug use, a personal morality that disapproves of drug use, high self-control, and high self-efficacy were negatively associated with the willingness to use. Willingness increased especially in situations of social approval when there was a stronger personal approval of drug use, or surprisingly when physicians’ diagnostic efforts were higher. The feigning willingness was lower in situations of social disapproval and when personal morality disapproved of feigning. Thus, personal and situational characteristics are relevant to understand both behaviors.

Abstract:

Objective & Design: Sleep problems are common and have been linked to health problems, diminished well-being, and impaired performance. Many scales to diagnose clinically relevant sleep problems are time-consuming, complex, and difficult to administer in non-clinical and multi-thematic studies. Through a multi-stage translation (from English to German) and scale testing process, we developed a parsimonious measure of sleep problems and daytime functioning for non-clinical applications based on the Athens Insomnia Scale. Results: Exploratory (N_{Study 1} = 25,140) and confirmatory (N_{Study 2} = 14,797) factor analyses suggest a two-dimensional structure with the subscales “sleep problems” and “daytime functioning”. Internal scale consistency was acceptable. Measurement invariance was found across time, gender, age, and diagnosed sleep disorders. The scale discriminates between people with and without sleep disorders and predicts emerging sleep disorders. Short-term retest reliability was acceptable (N_{Study 3} = 78). Convergent validity with other sleep measures and discriminant validity with indicators of well-being were observed (N_{Study 4} = 341). After a multi-stage translation to English, we confirmed the factor structure and found measurement invariance across languages (N_{Study 5} = 623). Conclusion: Our short 7-item scale has good psychometric properties and is suitable for self-administration, making it useful in measuring sleep problems and daytime functioning efficiently and reliably, especially for large population studies.

Am Montag, dem 25. November, wird die Veranstaltungsreihe Die Vielfalt der Gesellschaft fortgesetzt.

Ab 19:00 Uhr werden verschiedene Gastredner*innen im historischen Saal der Volkshochschule zu den Themen: "Ungleichheiten in der Familie" (Martin Diewald), "Ungleichheiten in Betrieben" (Silvia Melzer) und "Ungleichheiten in der Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie" (Anja Abendroth) referieren. Die Moderation der Veranstaltung übernimmt Gerd Kurbjuhn. Die Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit der Volkshochschule Bielefeld statt.

Am gestrigen 1. Oktober startete das Wintersemester 2019/20. Mit Beginn des neuen Semesters erfolgte auch ein personeller Wechsel an der Spitze der Fakultät. Detlef Sack löst Joanna Pfaff- Czarnecka ab, die von Oktober 2018 bis zum 30. September dieses Jahres als Dekanin die Geschicke der Fakultät leitete.

Als neue Prodekanin steht Detlef Sack zudem Ruth Ayaß zur Seite, die damit auf Martin Diewald folgt.

Am 03. Juli hielt Anja Abendroth ihre Antrittsvorlesung an der Fakultät für Soziologie. Titel und Thema der Vorlesung waren Digitalisierte Arbeitswelten: Persistenzen und Wandel von geschlechts-spezifischen Ungleichheitsregimen. Anja Abendroth wird am 03. Juli um 12 Uhr in Hörsaal X-E0-001 ihre Antrittsvorlesung unter dem Titel „Digitalisierte Arbeitswelten: Persistenzen und Wandel von geschlechtsspezifischen Ungleichheitsregimen“ halten. Zu diesem Anlass lädt die Dekanin herzlich ein.

Beim internationalen SOEP Workshop, der vom 8. bis 10 Oktober stattfindet sind noch Plätze verfügbar. Der Workshop stellt das Sozio-oekonomische Panel (SOEP) vor und bietet den Teilnehmern die Möglichkeit, ein fundiertes Verständnis für die Arbeit mit SOEP-Daten zu gewinnen. Zusätzlich werden die grundlegenden Analysepotentiale des SOEP (und Längsschnittdaten im Allgemeinen) untersucht.

Der Workshop ist für alle Studierenden und Forschenden aus den Bereichen der Soziologie, Wirtschaft, Psychologie geöffnet. Organisiert wird der Workshop von Marco Gießelmann, der Universität Bielefeld und dem DIW Berlin.
