Der Arbeitsbereich Mediensoziologie auf dem DGS-Kongress in Mainz

Vom 28. September bis 2. Oktober 2026 fand an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz der 43. Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) unter dem Titel „Zukünfte der Gesellschaft“ statt. Gemeinsam mit Udo Göttlich (Friedrichshafen) organisierte Dr. Christina Laut-Berger vom Arbeitsbereich Mediensoziologie eine der beiden Veranstaltungen der Sektion Medien- und Kommunikationssoziologie zum Thema „Zukünfte der (Des-)Informationen“. Die anregenden Beiträge befassten sich mit Öffentlichkeit und ihren Alternativen, mit Prozessen im Journalismus und algorithmischen Konstruktionen sowie mit der Frage nach dem Vertrauen in mediale Debatten.

Auch war die Sektion mit weiteren interessanten Veranstaltungen auf dem Kongress vertreten, dass die Sektion mit einer weiteren spannenden Veranstaltung auf dem Kongress vertreten war: "Wen kümmert’s, wer spricht?‘ – Zukünfte wissenschaftlicher (Medien-)Expertise“, organisiert von Anja Peltzer (Gießen) und Matthias Wieser (Klagenfurt). Hinzu kamen zwei Ad-hoc-Gruppen aus den Arbeitsgruppe Soziologie digitaler Spiele und Arbeitsgruppe Filmsoziologie der Sektion.

Auch Johannes Barth vertrat den Bielefelder AB Mediensoziologie auf dem DGS-Kongress. Er beteiligte sich mit einem Vortrag an der Veranstaltung „Beziehung der Zukunft: Über neue Formen sozialer Vernetzung“ der Sektion "Soziologische Netzwerkforschung". Sein Vortrag widmete sich KI-Chatbots, die verstorbene Personen nachbilden, und beleuchtete insbesondere die dadurch ermöglichten „continuing bonds“. Der Vortrag zeigte, dass sich die im Umgang mit solchen posthumen Bots hergestellten Verbundenheiten nicht notwendigerweise in der schlichten Verlängerung von zu Lebzeiten habitualisierten Kommunikationsbeziehungen erschöpfen. Vielmehr ermöglichen es die Bots, „continuing bonds“ auf vielfältige Weise in Kraft zu setzen und kreativ auszuhandeln.

Insgesamt blicken wir auf einen spannenden und gelungenen Kongress mit vielen anregenden Diskussionen und Begegnungen zurück und freuen uns schon auf den nächsten DGS-Kongress in Leipzig.

From September 28 to October 2, 2026, the 43rd Congress of the German Sociological Association (DGS), entitled “Zukünfte der Gesellschaft,” took place at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Together with Udo Göttlich (Friedrichshafen), Dr. Christina Laut-Berger from the Media Sociology Research Group organized one of the two sessions of the Section for Media and Communication Sociology, entitled “Zukünfte der (Des-)Informationen.” The thought-provoking contributions explored the public sphere and its alternatives, processes in journalism and algorithmic constructions, as well as questions of trust in media debates. The section was also represented by another engaging session, “‚Wen kümmert’s, wer spricht?‘ – Zukünfte wissenschaftlicher (Medien-)Expertise,” organized by Anja Peltzer (Gießen) and Matthias Wieser (Klagenfurt). In addition, two ad hoc groups were organized by the section's Working Groups on the Sociology of Digital Games and Film Sociology.

Johannes Barth also represented the Bielefeld Media Sociology Research and Teaching Unit at the DGS Congress. He gave a presentation in the session “Beziehung der Zukunft: Über neue Formen sozialer Vernetzung,” organized by the Section for Sociological Network Research. His presentation focused on AI chatbots that simulate deceased individuals, examining in particular the “continuing bonds” they enable. The presentation demonstrated that the connections established through interactions with such posthumous bots do not necessarily amount to a simple continuation of communication patterns established during the deceased person's lifetime. Rather, these bots enable continuing bonds to be actively maintained and creatively negotiated in a variety of ways.

Overall, we look back on an exciting and successful congress filled with stimulating discussions and encounters, and we are already looking forward to the next DGS Congress 2027 in Leipzig.

Gastvortrag: Digital Agency within (Forced) Migration Processes

Dr. Mihaela Nedelcu von der Universität Neuchâtel (Schweiz) hält einen Gastvortrag zum Thema „Digital Agency within (Forced) Migration Processes“.

Abstract:
While biometrics, digital traces and datafication more broadly lie at the heart of e-borders and e-control that are central to contemporary migration regimes, digital technologies have also transformed the migrants’ “capacity to make a difference” (Giddens 1984) in their own lives, and in the societies in which they live or belong. In this talk, I discuss digital agency along with three different lines of research: forced migration, transnational families and digital diasporas. Accordingly, I identify three forms of digitally mediated agency within migration processes (which I call survival, care, and militant agency) and argue for a socio-technical relational approach to agency in digital migration studies.

“Four Conferences, New Perspectives, and Valuable Research Exchanges”. RTG 2951 Doctoral Researcher Elisabeth Schmidt on her conference summer 2026

Between June and early October 2026, I had the opportunity to present my ongoing research on the careers of circus performers and their relationship to the global labour markets in which they work at four conferences. Each event offered a different perspective on my research and created valuable opportunities for discussion, feedback, and exchange with fellow researchers.

Four Conferences
I began my conference summer at the 10. Feldarbeitstage at TU Dortmund, where I presented my research under the title “Ethnografie einer Branche: Der Zirkus – eine auf Vertrauen basierte, internationale Industrie der Unsicherheit und des Risikos”. I then travelled to Bordeaux to participate in the 38th SASE Conference. In the panel “The Social Order of Global Labour Markets,” chaired by Prof. Karen Shire, I presented my paper “Global Entertainers (from Big Top to Cruise Ship): A Look into the Globality of Labor Markets for Circus Performers”. At the 17th ESA Conference in Warsaw, I presented my research as part of the Work, Employment and Industrial Relations research network. In the panel “Institutions & Employment,” chaired by Barbara Bechter, I gave a presentation entitled “Constructing Careers in Global Labor Markets: The Case of the Circus”. I concluded my conference summer at the 43rd Congress of the German Sociological Association in Mainz. In the AdH93 panel, “Wie sind grenzüberschreitende Arbeitsmärkte möglich? Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Lösung von Koordinationsproblemen jenseits des Nationalstaates,” chaired by Prof. Ursula Mense Petermann and Prof. Alexandra Scheele, I presented my paper “Global Entertainers (from Big Top to Cruise Ship): Eine Untersuchung über grenzüberschreitende Märkte und mobilitätsbasierte Karrieren von Zirkusartist*innen”.

What I Gained from the Conferences
At each of these conferences, I gained new perspectives on my research and valuable opportunities to develop my ideas through discussions with fellow scholars. The Feldarbeitstage encouraged me to reflect more deeply on ethnographic methods, the materiality of everyday practices, and the role of material objects in circus training and performance. At SASE, discussions about what “global” means in the context of labour markets helped me refine my theoretical approach to transnational employment relations, and attending the other panels broadened my understanding of economic sociology in general. The ESA conference offered further opportunities to exchange ideas with researchers working on the sociology of the arts, employment relations, and spatial mobility. As the intertwining of these three dimensions is central to my case study, this diverse program was particularly beneficial to me. Finally, attending the German Sociological Association’s congress for the first time allowed me to reconnect with familiar faces and discover the breadth of current sociological research in Germany. Across all four events, the feedback and conversations helped me sharpen my research questions, consider new analytical perspectives, and establish contacts that will support my ongoing work. Presenting my research in such varied academic settings also helped me identify connections between my case study and broader sociological debates.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to RTG 2951 for funding my participation in these four conferences. This support made it possible for me to present my research to diverse academic audiences, benefit from valuable feedback, and build connections that will contribute to the further development of my doctoral project.

RTG 2951 co-hosts dialogue between researchers and practitioners on migration brokerage

The Research Training Group “Cross-Border Labour Markets” (RTG 2951, Bielefeld University and University of Duisburg Essen) and the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute Freiburg invite to the upcoming online event "Migration Brokerage in a Changing World: Bringing Practice and Research into Dialogue". At the event, scholars and practitioners will share their experiences and expertise on migration brokerage. While brokerage is contested in some contexts, this event will discuss why it remains a necessary process in (cross-border) mobility. The event takes place with the active participation of RTG 2951 Postdoctoral Researcher Sandhya A.S.

The event consists of two parts:

Part 1: Practitioners on brokerage in Asia and Europe (9:00-10:00 CET)

The first session will feature invited practitioners, who are activists, representatives of civil society organizations, trade unions, and migrant support organizations. Participants will reflect on the changing dynamics of migration governance in their areas of work, their experiences with regulating, monitoring, or collaborating with brokers, as well as the opportunities, risks, and unintended consequences associated with brokerage.

The second session will bring together four scholars working on migration brokerage and related topics from different disciplinary perspectives, such as sociology, anthropology, political science, and international relations. The speakers will engage in a moderated dialogue exploring brokerage as a social, economic, and political institution. Particular attention will be paid to competing interpretations of brokerage: as a mechanism of exploitation, as an infrastructure of mobility, as a response to gaps in migration governance, and as a potentially indispensable component of contemporary migration systems.

RTG 2951 Doctoral Researchers Discuss Their Projects with Gracia Liu-Farrer (Waseda University)

On Tuesday, October 20, RTG 2951 welcomed sociologist and cross-border labour market expert Gracia Liu-Farrer for a workshop with its doctoral researchers.

During the workshop, doctoral researchers presented their ongoing research projects and received valuable feedback from Gracia Liu-Farrer. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss their research, gain new perspectives, and benefit from her expertise.

Gracia Liu-Farrer is currently a fellow at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She is also affiliated with Waseda University.

The workshop was a fruitful and inspiring exchange, and we are grateful to Gracia Liu-Farrer for sharing her expertise and engaging so thoughtfully with the doctoral researchers and their projects.

Am 26. Oktober 2026 hält Dr. Laura Haddad von der Universität Göttingen einen Vortrag zum Thema „Modische Inszenierungen und mediatisierte Modellpraktiken bei Hijabi Creatorinnen auf Instagram“.

Muslimische Frauen, die sich modisch kleiden wollen, sind häufig mit der Annahme konfrontiert, dass religiöse Körperbedeckung der vestimentären Emanzipation, wie sie modischem Ausdruck inhärent sein soll, zuwiderlaufe.

In ihrem ethnographischen Forschungsprojekt zu muslimischen Modebildern in Deutschland untersucht Laura Haddad, wie Hijabi Creatorinnen dominante Diskurse durch Alltagswissen und mediatisierte Modellpraktiken aneignen und umdeuten. Dabei erweitert sie den Diskursbegriff um visuelle Elemente und dekonstruiert die Trennung zwischen Bild und Text.

Der Vortrag beleuchtet zudem, wie Hijabi Creatorinnen Selbstvermarktung und gesellschaftspolitisches Engagement mit einer situativen Subjektivierung diskursiver Anrufungen verbinden. Ihre modischen Repräsentationen werden als transitionale Wissensbestände sich wandelnder Modellpraktiken verstanden.

Der Arbeitsbereich Mediensoziologie freut sich, Yunus Emre Cangönül als neuen wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter und Doktoranden im Team begrüßen zu dürfen. Im Rahmen des DFG-geförderten Schwerpunktprogramms Rethinking Disinformation arbeitet er im Projekt Re:SEP (Rethinking Disinformation as Socio-Epistemic Practice: Digital Conspiracy Narratives Across Media Environments and Interpretative Communities). Yunus hat seinen Bachelorabschluss in Kommunikationswissenschaften an der Hacettepe-Universität in Ankara erworben und kürzlich sein Masterstudium der Soziologie an der Universität Bielefeld abgeschlossen. Während seines Masterstudiums beschäftigte er sich insbesondere mit Mediensoziologie. In seiner Masterarbeit untersuchte er die diskursive Konstruktion von Desinformation in der EU-Politik. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen Desinformation, umkämpftes Wissen, digitale Kommunikation, epistemische Autorität sowie die Governance von Wissen und Informationen in digitalen Medienumgebungen.

The working unit of Media Sociology is pleased to welcome Yunus Emre Cangönül as a new research associate and doctoral researcher. He has joined the DFG-funded Priority Programme Rethinking Disinformation and will be working within the Re:SEP project (Rethinking Disinformation as Socio-Epistemic Practice: Digital Conspiracy Narratives Across Media Environments and Interpretative Communities). Yunus holds a BA in Communication Sciences from Hacettepe University in Ankara and recently completed his MA in Sociology at Bielefeld University, where he focused particularly on media sociology. His master's thesis examined the discursive construction of disinformation in EU policy. His research interests include disinformation, contested knowledge, digital communication, epistemic authority, and the governance of knowledge and information in digital environments.

Feministische Perspektiven auf Arbeit: Ein neuer Sammelband zu Zeit und Geld

Soeben ist der von Alexandra Scheele gemeinsam mit Diana Auth, Julia Lepperhoff, Ingrid Kurz-Scherf und Clarissa Rudolph herausgegebene Sammelband "Zeit und Geld. Feministische Perspektiven auf Arbeit" erschienen. Die Autorinnen richten den Blick auf strukturelle geschlechterbezogene Ungleichheiten auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, in Arbeitsorganisationen und im sozialen Sicherungssystem. Dabei sind (Arbeits-)Zeit und der Zugang zu materiellen Ressourcen weiterhin Schlüsselthemen der Emanzipation und eine zentrale Voraussetzung für politische und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe. Im Band finden sich u.a. Beiträge zur Arbeitszeitdebatte, zur Vermögensverteilung, zur Entwicklung der Gleichstellungspolitik und zum Kita-Streik. Alle Beiträge sind im Open Access frei zugänglich.

How do labour markets cross borders? Who makes these markets possible? And what kinds of institutions, infrastructures, and networks shape them?

The DFG funded RTG 2951 brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers to explore these questions and investigate cross-border labour markets as social structures. Our research examines a diverse range of labour markets and forms of work—including those involving performers, fashion models, physicians, engineers, au pairs, Russian anti-war refugees, and workers on digital platforms.
We are particularly interested in the transnational market makers, infrastructures, and institutions that enable labour markets to emerge, operate, and become consolidated across borders.

As an interdisciplinary research and qualification programme, RTG 2951 provides a first class research-oriented environment for early-career researchers and supports their development towards academic and non-academic careers. RTG 2951 is jointly hosted by Bielefeld University and the University of Duisburg-Essen.

RTG 2951 Welcomes Mercator Fellow Prof. Heidi Gottfried to Duisburg October 1 – December 31, Duisburg Research Training Group 2951: Cross-Border Labour Markets is delighted to welcome Prof. Heidi Gottfried from Wayne State University, Detroit, as a Mercator Fellow from October 1 to December 31. Prof. Gottfried is a sociologist whose research focuses on labour movements, gender, migration, and the political economy of care. Her work on global labour migration and transnational research connects closely with the interdisciplinary research agenda of RTG 2951. During her stay she will participate in the RTG activities and meet with RTG 2951 Doctoral Researchers. She will also contribute to the internal RTG 2951 Lecture Series with a talk on: Crossing Borders: Surveying Migrant Labor with Facebook. RTG 2951 warmly welcomes Prof. Gottfried to Duisburg and looks forward to an inspiring period of academic exchange, collaboration, and discussion on global migration, labour, and care.

Vidyasagar has worked from April 2023 to March 2026 as a Researcher on a DFG-funded project titled “Navigating Universities: Student Aspirations, Boundaries, and Transformations in India and the Philippines,” led by Prof. Dr Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka.

Digitales Präsenzverhalten im Homeoffice: Neue Studie mit Daten des IAB-HOPP

Wie machen Beschäftigte im Homeoffice ihre Arbeit sichtbar – und welche Rolle spielen dabei der berufliche Status, die Arbeitsplatzunsicherheit und die Arbeitsunzufriedenheit? Vor kurzem ist die neue Studie zu digitalem Präsenzverhalten von Beschäftigten im Homeoffice in Work, Employment and Society erschienen.

Digitales Präsenzverhalten kann unterschiedliche Formen annehmen. Diese unterscheiden sich darin, wie sie auf die Norm idealer Beschäftigter reagieren: Manche sind eher reaktiv, andere proaktiv. Einige Formen bringen eine stärkere Orientierung an der Norm zum Ausdruck, während andere eine Distanzierung von ihr darstellen können.

Die Studie untersucht drei Facetten von digitalem Präsenzverhalten:

digitale Verfügbarkeit
digitale Sichtbarkeit von Arbeitsergebnissen
digitales Vortäuschen von Präsenz

Die Auswertung der repräsentativen Stichprobe von Beschäftigten im Homeoffice in Deutschland zeigt, dass digitales Präsenzverhalten relativ weit verbreitet sind. Beschäftigte mit höherem beruflichem Status sind eher digital verfügbar. Die Arbeitsplatzunsicherheit von Beschäftigten ging eher mit einer stärkeren Ausprägung aller drei Facetten einher. Arbeitsunzufriedenheit wiederum begünstigte das digitale Vortäuschen von Präsenz und verringerte die digitale Sichtbarkeit.

Insgesamt deutet die Studie darauf hin, dass digitales Präsenzverhalten sowohl eine Überzeichnung der Norm idealer Beschäftigter als auch ungleiche berufliche Situationen unter Beschäftigten im Homeoffice widerspiegelt.

APSA best book award on the role of ideas and knowledge claims in politics goes to Dr. Alejandro Esguerra

Dr. Alejandro Esguerra, former post-doc in the AG Straßheim, has won the 2026 Jeffrey Friedman Prize from the Ideas, Knowledge and Politics section of the American Political Science Association (APSA). His book, 'The Politics of Beginning', University of Michigan Press was selected as the best recent book on the role of ideas or knowledge claims in politics.

On the book: Timber companies, Indigenous communities, and environmental activists, many of them bitter adversaries, somehow built the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) together. How? Using live recordings of the FSC’s 1993 founding assembly, the book reconstructs this constitutional moment from the inside. It shows that private authority isn’t handed down. It is translated, performed, and contested by real people in a room. To tell that story, Esguerra developed a dramaturgical methodology and a mechanism of translation, rooted in Actor-Network Theory. At a moment when the environmental crisis demands radical rethinking of how societies govern human–nature relations, this book reveals the fragile, contested conditions under which new forms of authority are born. Straßheim als Visiting Professor am Sciences Po

Das Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public Policies (LIEPP), eine Forschungsplattform des Sciences Po in Paris, hat im Rahmen seines International Scholars Programme Prof. Dr. Holger Straßheim für den Sommer 2027 als Visiting Professor zu einem mehrwöchigen Forschungsaufenthalt eingeladen. Im Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen am LIEPP und der dortigen Forschungsgruppe „Environmental Politics“ wird Straßheim seine Forschungen zu internationalen Expertenplattformen an der Schnittstelle von Klima- und Gesundheitspolitik weiterentwickeln. Forschungsaufenthalte am LIEPP werden einmal jährlich in einem internationalen Auswahlverfahren vergeben.

RTG 2951 Lecture Series: Gracia Liu Farrer on the Politics of Labor

The RTG 2951 Lecture Series is pleased to welcome Gracia Liu Farrer (Waseda University) for a lecture titled “The Politics of Labor: Contested Governance of the Indonesia–Japan Transnational Labor Market.”

In this lecture, Gracia Liu-Farrer examines the political construction of the transnational labour market linking Indonesia to Japan, using transnational labour market making as a methodological lens to identify the actors shaping cross-border worker dispatch under Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program. Empirically, she traces a rivalry between two blocs: Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower (MoM) and its affiliated training-sending organizations (LPK-SO), and the newer Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) alongside private recruitment agencies (P3MI). Private recruitment agencies are pushing to administer SSW entirely, displacing LPK-SO, layering onto a longer contest between Manpower's historical dominance and KP2MI's newer mandate. These claims sit against the backdrop of the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP), long run by Manpower and LPK-SO, which classified participants as "trainees" rather than workers. SSW was meant to fix TITP's core flaw—job immobility. P3MI invokes this history, emphasizing the need for labour protection and its own "ethical recruitment" standards to argue that SSW workers should be routed through P3MI like other overseas labor migrants. Ultimately, Gracia Liu-Farrer argues this contestation reflects two competing visions of SSW-ESDP: Japan increasingly frames it as long-term skill training and labour import with a latent path to permanent residency, while Indonesian actors—both KP2MI and P3MI—treat it as fixed-term, temporary labour, reinforced by narratives of migrants preferring to return home under repatriation insurance. This divergence in policy logics drives the rivalry over who controls labour dispatch to Japan.

Gracia Liu-Farrer is professor of sociology at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, and Director of Institute of Asian Migration at Waseda University, Japan. Her research examines immigration into Japan, transnational labor and student mobilities in East Asia as well as between Asia and Europe. She is the author of Labor Migration from China to Japan and coeditor of the Routledge Handbook of Asian Migrations.

Im Mittelpunkt des Panels stehen die globalen Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen von Beschäftigten in maritimen Infrastrukturen sowie die Auswirkungen aktueller sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und politischer Entwicklungen auf ihre Arbeit.

Über die Seefahrt werden weltweit rund 90 Prozent aller Güter transportiert. Entsprechend wirken sich globale sozialpolitische und wirtschaftliche Auseinandersetzungen unmittelbar auf die maritime Arbeit aus. Seeleute und Hafenarbeiter:innen sind unter anderem von sogenannten „Schattenflotten“, Pandemien, militärischen Konflikten und veränderten Migrationsregimen betroffen.

Straßheim invited to join international expert group on ’Science and Democracy’

Following his nomination by ALLEA (All European Academies) as an expert for the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA), Prof. Dr. Straßheim was invited to join a working group and contribute to the evidence review „Science and Democracy“. SAPEA is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM). Together with the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors, it provides independent scientific advice to European Commissioners to support their decision-making. SAPEA also works on raising awareness of scientific advice and evidence in policymaking and on stimulating debate in Europe about these issues. At its core the Evidence Review Report is supposed to give answers to pressing questions: In a time of societal, technological, geopolitical, climatic and environmental change how can science strengthen Europe’s democratic functioning and resilience? How can science-informed policymaking help societies think critically, deliberate openly, and reach consensus on complex decisions?

Wir verabschieden uns von Dr. Mei-Chen Spiegelberg, die in ihrer Lehre insbesondere digitale Phänomene wie Cancel Culture, Shitstorms und Skandalisierung aus der Perspektive der Invektivität sowie qualitative und ethnografische Forschungsansätze behandelt hat. Sie promovierte in Soziologie an der Universität Bielefeld zur interkulturellen Kommunikation und untersuchte dabei Interaktionen in interkulturellen Trainings zur chinesisch-deutschen Zusammenarbeit. Ab Oktober 2026 wird sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Ostasiatischen Seminar der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen tätig sein. Dort wird sie ihre Forschung zu transnationaler Migration und digitalen Phänomenen im Kontext der Chinaforschung und mit einem besonderen Fokus auf sino-europäische Beziehungen weiterführen. Zum Abschied bedankt sich Dr. Mei-Chen Spiegelberg besonders bei Prof. Heike Greschke und ihrem Team für den intensiven wissenschaftlichen Austausch und das unterstützende Umfeld. Wir wünschen ihr für ihren weiteren wissenschaftlichen Weg in Göttingen alles Gute und viel Erfolg!

We bid farewell to Dr. Mei-Chen Spiegelberg, whose teaching has focused in particular on digital phenomena such as cancel culture, shitstorms, and scandalization from the perspective of invectivity, as well as on qualitative and ethnographic research approaches. She completed her doctorate in sociology at Bielefeld University on intercultural communication, examining interactions in intercultural training programs for Chinese-German cooperation. From October 2026, she will work as a research associate at the Institute of East Asian Studies at Georg-August University Göttingen. There, she will continue her research on transnational migration and digital phenomena in the context of China studies, with a particular focus on Sino-European relations. As she leaves, Dr. Mei-Chen Spiegelberg would particularly like to thank Prof. Heike Greschke and her team for the intensive academic exchange and the supportive environment. We wish her all the very best and every success in her further academic career in Göttingen!

Im Oktober 2026 startet am Arbeitsbereich Mediensoziologie das DFG-geförderte Projekt Re:SEP „Rethinking Disinformation as Socio-Epistemic Practice". Das dreijährige Projekt wird von Dr. Christina Laut-Berger geleitet und ist gemeinsam mit 13 anderen Projekten im interdisziplinären Schwerpunktprogramm „Re:Dis – Rethinking Disinformation" (SPP 2573) der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft angesiedelt. Ziel des Projektes ist es, die epistemischen Praktiken digitaler Verschwörungstheorie-Gruppen qualitativ zu vergleichen, um die sozialen Verzahnungen epistemischer Aushandlungsprozesse von (Des-)Informationen beschreibbar zu machen.

In October 2026, the DFG-funded Re:SEP project, ‘Rethinking Disinformation as Socio-Epistemic Practice’, will commence in the Media Sociology working group. The three-year project is led by Dr Christina Laut-Berger and forms part of the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) interdisciplinary priority programme ‘Re:Dis – Rethinking Disinformation’ (SPP 2573), alongside 13 other projects. The aim of the project is to conduct a qualitative comparison of the epistemic practices of digital conspiracy theory groups in order to describe the social interconnections of epistemic negotiation processes involving (dis)information.
