Am 11. und 12. Mai 2023 fand in Speyer ein internationaler Workshop zu Policy-Narrativen und Macht statt. Der Workshop wurde gemeinsam vom Team des Lehrstuhls für Vergleichende Verwaltungswissenschaft und Policy-Analyse an der Universität Speyer (Colette Vogeler, Johanna Künzler, Anne-Marie Parth), Sonja Blum (Universität Bielefeld) und Johanna Kuhlmann (Universität Bremen) organisiert. Teilnehmer*innen des hybriden Workshops präsentierten u.a. Analysen aus Schweden, Ecuador und den USA. Ziel des Workshops war es, ein Special Issue zur Rolle von Macht im Narrative Policy Framework bei einer Fachzeitschrift vorzubereiten.

Prof. Dr. Priska Daphi wurde im Februar 2023 in den Wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Deutschen Stiftung Friedensforschung berufen.

Zum Sommersemester 2023 übernimmt Prof. Dr. Sonja Blum die Leitung der AG Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft & Politikfeldanalyse. Am Montag, 13. März 2023 überreichte Professor Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Sagerer, Rektor der Universität Bielefeld, ihr die Urkunde für die Ernennung zur Universitätsprofessorin. Sonja Blum war zuvor an der FernUniversität in Hagen, der KU Leuven, der Universität Wien sowie der Universität Münster tätig.

Am 26. Januar vertraten Studierende das „Team Bielefeld“ bei der großen Abschlussdebatte von „NRW debattiert Europa“. Das Format wurde 2016 von Michael Kaeding (Jean-Monnet-Lehrstuhl für Europäische Integration und Europapolitik der Universität Duisburg-Essen) ins Leben gerufen und wird von der Staatskanzlei des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen unterstützt.

The „Research Handbook on Leave Policy. Parenting and Social Inequalities in a Global Perspective“ has just been published with Edward Elgar. The book is co-edited by Sonja Blum together with Ivana Dobrotić (University of Zagreb) and Alison Koslowski (University College London).

Featuring 28 contributions from leading international scholars of social policy, the Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of conceptual and methodological developments in leave policy research, as well as state-of-the-art findings on leave policy determinants and outcomes globally.

The Research Handbook is organised in five parts:

-          Part I: Conceptual and analytical challenges in leave policy research

-          Part II: Analysing the drivers of leave policies: politics and ideas

-          Part III: Assessing the outcomes of leave policies

-          Part IV: Leave policies in comparative perspective

-          Part V: Gaps and the future of leave policy research and development

The topic of leave policy design and social inequalities is placed at the centre of the Research Handbook. Chapters illustrate its relevance in the context of gendered care and employment practices, precarious, underinsured, and nonstandard employment, informal economies, migration, family changes, and growing financial strains for parents. Using parental leave policy as an empirical lens to further our understanding of the intersectional nature of social inequalities, the editors ultimately consider whether there is a case to reconfigure leave policy as a social right.

The paper explores the legacy of the pandemic for future science-advice policy relationships by investigating how the UK government's engagement with ethical advice is organized institutionally. We provide an analysis of some key ethical moments in the UK Government response to the pandemic, and institutions and national frameworks which exist to provide ethical advice on policy strategies. The paper is one of the outputs of our international research project "Ethic and Expertise in Times of Crisis" (Bielefeld University and Birmingham University).

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZIF) at Bielefeld University has decided to fund an international workshop on global philanthropic organizations. The workshop titled "Evidence-based benevolence? The role of philanthropic organizations global public policies" will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kaasch, PD Dr. Marc Mölders, Dr. Evelyn Moser (Bonn), Prof. Dr. Oliver Razum, and Prof. Dr. Holger Straßheim. In areas such as global public health, climate change, or poverty allevitation, philanthropic organizations have become both the providers and proponents of evidence-based policies. The workshop investigates the implications by assembling internationally renowed researchers. What do we know about the impact of evidence-based and data-driven policies on policy decisions? What are the underlying political and epistemic belief systems? What are the consequences for democracy?

The workshop will take place on March 27-29 at the ZIF.

Alejandro Esguerra has just published a new article on "Translating the Anthropocene: Indigenous Activists and Human Rights in infrastructual Projects" in International Studies Review. In this article, he asks how infrastructures responsible for the Climate Crisis become sites of indigenous human rights activism. Activists create new norms mobilizing indigenous cosmologies. Theories of translation allow to explain this constitutive process of norm emergence.
