Das Theoriezentrum (ZThF) zu Gast in der Vormoderne

Die Metapher des «Flusses» und der «Zirkulation» ist ein durch Nationalökonomen seit der Frühen Neuzeit bestens verankertes Sinnbild, auf dem die Ingenieurswissenschaften ihre Tätigkeiten der Verflüssigung von Produktions-, Lagerungs- und Transportprozessen ausrichteten. Doch wie lässt sich die aus solchen Denkvorstellungen entstehende Logistik als Materialflussmaschinerie theoretisch fassen und methodisch erforschen? Was erfahren wir über historische Grosskonzepte wie Industrialisierung oder Globalisierung, wenn wir sie quasi von der Seitenlinie der Logistik betrachten? Im Vortrag werde ich mich mit der Frage beschäftigen, wie technologische Infrastrukturen kritisch erforscht werden können und was es bedeutet, den Kapitalismus an den Orten des Stillstandes zu betrachten.

The Theory Centre (ZThF) as a guest in the pre-modern era

The metaphor of "flow" and "circulation" is a metaphor that has been well established by national economists since the early modern period and on which the engineering sciences have based their activities in the fluidisation of production, storage and transport processes. But how can we theoretically conceptualise and methodically research logistics as a material flow machinery? What do we learn about major historical concepts such as industrialisation or globalisation if we look at them from the sidelines of logistics, so to speak? In the lecture, I will deal with the question of how technological infrastructures can be critically researched and what it means to look at capitalism at the places of standstill.

The Transatlantic Workshop in History organized by Bielefeld University and the University of Notre Dame du Lac (Indiana, USA) will take place at Bielefeld University from May 16 to 21, 2024. The workshop has established itself as a productive form of international research exchange for both doctoral and experienced researchers. The Faculty Talks will take place on Friday, May 17 and Monday, May 20 in the afternoon from 4 p.m. in hybrid form. They are dedicated to the topic "Uncertainties in History".
