The Sounds of Science

In March 2024, Musicians and researchers from the fields of mathematics, computer science, biology, aesthetics, data and systems science and complexity research came together at ZiF for the workshop "Complexity, Aesthetics, and Data Sonification". They discussed how an intuitively understandable sonification of (research) data could be achieved and enriched the workshop with public music and sonification performances.

Evidence is Good. More Evidence is Not Always Better

Evidence is good. More evidence is better. This seems self-evident and yet it could be wrong or at least too simple. This is how Liam Mannix summarizes a result of the ZiF research group "The Epistemology of Evidence-Based Policy: How Philosophy Can Facilitate the Science-Policy Interface" in his newsletter Examine. From February to June 2023, the interdisciplinary group with fellows from philosophy, law, ecosystem research, epidemiology and biology at ZiF researched how politicians deal with scientific findings - and why it is sometimes so difficult for science to get its evidence heard. The group's final conference took place at the ZiF in December.

Rationality, Objectivity, and Autonomy in the Legal Sphere

In November, Professor Åsa Wettergren and Associate Professor Sara Uhnoo from the Department of Sociology and Work Science, and Moa Bladini, Associate Professor from the Law Department at Gothenburg University, Sweden, worked at ZiF as the Visiting Group “Consent-Based Rape Legislation in Practice: Challenging Judicial Core Values”. The Forum on the Future of Evidence-Based Policy

Climate change, biological invasions, the destruction of ecosystems, pandemics and unequal access to public health services by huge parts of the global population increase the interest in evidence-based policymaking. Therefore, the Research Group “The Epistemology of Evidence-Based Policy”, convened by Dr Anne Schwenkenbecher (Murdoch University, Australia) Dr Remco Heesen (London School of Economics and Political Science) and Prof Chad Hewitt (Lincoln University New Zealand), organized the "Forum on the Future of Evidence-Based Policy" at ZiF in December 2023.

Better Understanding Human-Environment Interactions

The ZiF cooperation group "Volcanoes, Climate and History" is calling for a strengthened commitment to transdisciplinary collaboration to study past and present human-environmental interactions, which they say will advance our understanding of these complex, entangled histories. Their recommendations were just published in the journal Science Advances.

AI and Art - Exhibition "Latent Space Agency" by Moritz Wehrmann

The "latent space" is a space of possibilities and voids that leads into a dimension beyond our everyday understanding of logic and world contexts. ZiF Artist in Residence 2022 Moritz Wehrmann questions the nature of spaces and dimensions, be it in the mathematical representation of a high-dimensional space in AI models, in the relations of the media used and thematized or in the physical, sensually perceptible space. In latent spaces, as in Moritz Wehrmann's works, the incoherent is connected and opens up new perspectives.The exhibition was opened in October 2023.
