Federal conference of the Representative Bodies for Severely Disabled Employees from March 12-14

Representatives of Bielefeld University's Representative Body for Severely Disabled Employees attended this year's Federal Conference of Representatives for Severely Disabled Employees. All representatives of severely disabled employees in Germany were invited to the conference, which provided insights into the work of disabled employees' representatives in all employer sectors, such as the public sector, corporations and companies as well as church institutions.

In the shadow of gender equality: women with disabilities on International Women's Day

On the occasion of International Women's Day, we are taking a special look at the situation of women with disabilities - a group whose concerns are still too often ignored despite significant progress in gender equality. Almost one in five women worldwide is affected by a disability. In Germany, 12.3% of the female population was officially recognized as disabled in 2021. These figures do not reflect the full reality, as women who are chronically ill without an officially recognized degree of disability, for example, are not taken into account.

SHUFFLE Continues

The collaborative project SHUFFLE is set to continue its funding through the "Innovation in Higher Education Teaching" foundation, which has approved an extension until the end of December 2025, extending the original duration by 17 months.

Interdisciplinary panel discussion at the ZAB - Forum Accessibility

On November 28, 2023, the ZAB welcomed six guests to the ZAB - Forum Accessibility: Professors Lara Keuck, Tanja Sappok, Christian Brandt and Sabine Steinke discussed the highly topical subject of "Changeability and effectiveness of medical diagnoses" with moderator Ninia LaGrande and the audience. Symposium "Studying with mental illness: Current findings and need for action on the way to an inclusive university"

Mental illness is by far the most common form of impairment among students with disabilities or chronic illnesses. At Bielefeld University, almost 60% of students with a disability or chronic illness state that they are affected by a mental illness. Mental illness has a particularly detrimental effect on studies. Almost 84% of affected students report that their illness affects their studies to a moderate to very high degree.

The human rights model of disability: Prof. Dr. Theresia Degener gave an exciting talk at the 3rd ZAB - Forum Accessibility

On October 17, the ZAB - Forum Accessibility once again dealt with an exciting topic. This time Prof. Dr. Theresia Degener appeared in front of the audience, connected from her own home office via Zoom. In her presentation, she highlighted the research project entitled "The Human Rights Model of Disability in Times of Crisis" and how this model contrasts with the medical model, which often reduces people with disabilities only to their (real or presumed) health limitations.

Mental Health First Aiders at the ZAB

In numerous counseling sessions, employees at the ZAB deal with the topic of mental and psychological health among students and employees of Bielefeld University on a daily basis. In keeping with the Mental Health Week from October 10 to 20, 2023, two people at ZAB have trained to become Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) first responders.
