The TransMIGZ-Project (Transnational Influences, Migrant Identities, and Social Cohesion) has published a new working-paper entitled "Transnational conflicts, belongings, and social interactions"!
The report is based on a collection of up-to-date information and insights from experts focusing on Turkish migration to Europe/Germany and resulted from an online panel that took place 1 December 2021 as part of the IKG 25th year Conference.

Heute vor 30 Jahren wurden in Mölln die 51-jährige Bahide Arslan, ihre Enkelin Yeliz (10) und ihre Nichte Ayse (14) nach einem rechtsextremen Brandanschlag ermordet. Neun weitere Menschen wurden zum Teil schwer verletzt. Dazu hat Prof. Dr. Andreas Zick im Interview mit NDR Info heute Folgendes gesagt.

Dear Colleagues,
at our 5th Peace and Conflict Talk (PaCT) on 4 November 2022, we talked about the situation of protesting women in Iran. We got a picture of the situation by listening to Azadeh Akbari (University of Twente) and Tabassom Fanaian (Independent Researcher, Oslo). Their hopes in science and in the community of researchers are high. Subsequently, Tabssom wrote and published the attached letter. It goes to us, so we are very happy to publish this letter. We hope it will be noticed and that the research community can help and support the women and protesters in Iran. We thank our colleague Tabassom very much.

bei unserem 5. Peace and Conflict Talk (PaCT) am 4. November 2022 haben wir über die Situation der protestierenden Frauen im Iran gesprochen. Wir haben uns ein Bild der Lage gemacht, indem wir Azadeh Akbari (University of Twente) und Tabassom Fanaian (Independent Researcher, Oslo) zugehört haben. Ihre Hoffnungen in die Wissenschaft und in die Gemeinschaft der Forschenden sind groß. Im Anschluss hat Tabssom den angehängten Brief geschrieben und veröffentlicht. PD Dr. Anna-Lisa Müller´s (IKG) research was part of a new publication: "Preserving and Constructing Place Attachment in Europe".

In this chapter she argues that place attachment in cities stems from constant (re-)negotiatons between individuals and groups in urban space and their interaction with the space’s materiality. Based on a case study from Darmstadt, Germany, she shows how citizens and urban materiality engage in a process of co-creating place attachment. Empirical data from autoethnographic observation and photographic documentation of the Georg-Büchner-Platz, a centrally located urban square in Darmstadt, highlight how people establish attachments to particular places in their environment by interacting with other people and the ambient materiality and how this very materiality serves as means to stabilise attachments to places and as means to re-frame local belonging and place attachment. The case study is evidence for the broader argument followed in this chapter that place attachment should be understood as dynamic over time and fundamentally intertwined with the material qualities of spaces and has the potential to contribute to social cohesion in an urban society.

Katharina Leimbach (IKG) and Dr. Nicole Bögelein (University of Cologne) have published a chapter on "How to Deal with "Doing Social Inequality" by "Doing Criminological (Qualitative) Research"" in the soon to be published book "Qualitative Research in Criminology".

Criminological research is a challenging field in many ways. The discipline criticizes the labeling carried out by the criminal justice system, which marks certain groups of people as “deviant,” “criminal,” or “dangerous.” Nevertheless, criminological studies often fall into the same trap. By relying on labels that the criminal justice system has applied when accessing the field through prisons, probation officers, or other kinds of support systems for offenders, sampling and labeling are intertwined. This article scrutinizes how qualitative reconstructive research supports and reproduces social inequality. It applies the concept of “doing social problems” and emphasizes a constructionist point of view. Furthermore, we review the sampling mechanisms of recent studies: What concepts of “social problems” do we see? What world does the criminological research at hand reconstruct? In our conclusion, we call for a sensitive approach and a broad discussion of possibilities and limitations. To us, qualitative reconstructive research – in fact – seems to offer some solutions for making the processes of labeling visible. We ask how social knowledge systems concerning crime and deviance are constituted and how we, as criminologists, contribute to them through our research practice.

The (Re)Searching Diversity Podcast received the 1st prize of the CIDER public science award!

The podcast is a project by Jana Vietze, Sabrina Alhanachi, Miriam Schwarzenthal, Sharleen Pevec, Tuğçe Aral and our IKG-colleague Zeynep Demir.

Its three main goals are "to increase visibility of inspiring social scientists and of excellent research on ethnic, cultural, and migration-related diversity, to offer an innovative, low-threshold teaching format to better connect to our higher education students’ realities and to help our higher education students access current scientific discourses on diversity, equity, and inclusion".

CIDER is an interdisciplinary network of post-doctoral educational researchers, a joint initiative of Leibnitz Bildung and Jacobs Foundation.
