Das Forschungsinstitut Gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt (FGZ) befasst sich in seinen über 80 Forschungsprojekten in elf deutschen Städten mit einer Vielzahl wichtiger Themen, die unser Zusammenleben beeinflussen. Um die Bandbreite an Themen, die in Bielefeld erforscht werden, abzubilden, stellen sich die Bielefelder Forschungsprojekte des FGZ anhand einer Filmreihe im Lichtwerk Kino vor.

Der filmische Weg zur Wissenschaft erzählt dabei zunächst von vorne: die Filme stellen keine Ergebnisse vor, sondern führen ein in die eigentlichen Probleme und Fragestellungen, die Forschung zu gesellschaftlichem Zusammenhalt in Bielefeld so wichtig macht.

In its more than 80 research projects in eleven German cities, the Research Institute for Social Cohesion (FGZ) deals with a variety of important topics that influence our coexistence. In order to reflect the range of topics being researched in Bielefeld, the FGZ's Bielefeld research projects are presented in a film series at the Lichtwerk Kino.

The cinematic path to science starts from the beginning: the films do not present results, but introduce the actual problems and questions that make research on social cohesion in Bielefeld so important.

Nach Einschätzung von Prof. Dr. Andreas Zick ist es in Deutschland ein extremer Einzelfall, dass das tot aufgefundene zwölfjährige Mädchen Luise aus Freudenberg von zwei Kindern umgebracht worden ist. Wichtig sei nun zu schauen, welche Faktoren extreme Gewalt bei Kindern fördern und welche Maßnahmen danach nötig sind.

In contribution with the IKG, Prof. Dr. Kayvan Bozorgmehr, Prof. Dr. Simon Kühne, and the contribution of Louise Biddle, have published a paper in BMJ Global Health entitled:
"Local political climate and spill-over effects on refugee and migrant health: a conceptual framework and call to advance the evidence".

Abstract:

The health of refugees and migrants is determined by a wide range of factors. Among these, the local political climate in the postmigration phase is an important determinant which operates at interpersonal and institutional levels. We present a conceptual framework to advance theory, measurement and empirical evidence related to the small-area factors which shape and determine the local political climate, as these may translate into variations in health outcomes among refugees, migrants and other marginalised population groups. Using the example of Germany, we present evidence of small-area variation in factors defining political climates, and present and discuss potential pathways from local political climates to health outcomes. We show that anti-immigrant and antirefugee violence is a Europe-wide phenomenon and elaborate how resilience of individuals, communities, and the health system may function as moderator of the effects of the local political climate on health outcomes. Building on a pragmatic review of international evidence on spill-over effects identified in other racialised groups, we present a conceptual framework which incorporates direct effects as well as ‘spill-over’ effects on mental health with the aim to spark further academic discussion and guide empirical analysis on the topic. After presenting and discussing methodological challenges, we call for collective efforts to build coalitions between social sciences, conflict and violence studies, political science, data science, social psychologists and epidemiology to advance theory, measurement, and analysis of health effects of local political climates.

Die Präventionsarbeit von Islamismus und Rechtsextremismus basiert auf Annahmen und Erfahrungswissen über ein gesellschaftliches Problem, das sich nicht ohne weiteres objektiv und konkret beschreiben lässt. Dr. Katharina Leimbach untersuchte in ihrem Forschungsprojekt, inwiefern Akteure der Präventionsarbeit selbst auf die Konstruktion von Radikalisierung als gesellschaftliches Problem einwirken und zu dessen Reproduktion beitragen. In diesem Beitrag erläutert sie ihre wichtigsten Erkenntnisse.

Led by Pascal Schlechter (University of Cambridge, England) and together with Nexhmedin Morina (University of Münster), Jens Hellmann (IKG) has co-authored a recently published article in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology, entitled “Self-efficacy and locus of control as transdiagnostic factors in Middle Eastern refugees”. The article is published open access and can be found here.

Abstract:
Background: Many refugees report high levels of psychopathology. As a countermeasure, some psychological interventions aim at targeting mental health difficulties in refugees transdiagnostically. However, there is a lack of knowledge about relevant transdiagnostic factors in refugee populations.
Objective: To inform intervention efforts empirically, we investigated whether self-efficacy and locus of control are transdiagnostically associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, somatisation, psychological distress, and a higher-order psychopathology factor (‘p’) in Middle Eastern refugees residing in Germany.
Method: In total, 200 Middle Eastern refugees took part in this cross-sectional study, comprising 160 male and 40 female refugees. Participants were, on average, 25.56 years old(SD= 9.19), and 182 (91%) originally came from Syria, while remaining refugees were from Iraq or Afghanistan. They completed measures of depression, anxiety, somatisation, self-efficacy, and locus of control.
Results: In multiple regression models adjusting for demographic factors (gender and age), self-efficacy and external locus of control were transdiagnostically related to depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, psychological distress, and a higher-order psychopathology factor. Internal locus of control had no detectable effect in these models.
Conclusions: Self-efficacy and external locus of control appear critical in the mental health of refugees and may be important mechanisms in overcoming posttraumatic stress and resettlement stressors. Our findings support the need to target self-efficacy and external locus of control as transdiagnostic factors of general psychopathology in Middle Eastern refugees.
