The Golfer’s Steady Gaze

Researchers at the Cluster of Excellence CITEC investigating motor learning

For the first time in 112 years, golf is again an Olympic event. Olympic golfers hone the skills to ensure their accuracy not only with practical training, but also with mental exercises. Researchers at the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology at Bielefeld University are investigating the question of how the brain of a professional golfer works in comparison to that of a novice. Not only can the researchers measure what advantages professionals have over novices: in their studies, they are also testing training concepts that can be used by golfers to optimize how they perform their movements on the green.

Insights into the dawn of the universe

‘research_tv’ presents LOFAR: the largest radio telescope in the world

What did the universe look like just after the Big Bang? How did the first stars and galaxies evolve? Seeking answers to these questions, researchers at Bielefeld University are looking way back into the past. With the digital radio telescope LOFAR, they are picking up signals that have taken billions of years to reach us. ‘research_tv’ is presenting the LOFAR station in Norderstedt. It is being run by Bielefeld University in cooperation with Universität Hamburg.

Boosting Swimming Performance with Sound Data

System from the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) transforms data on water flow into sound. Bielefeld University’s „research_tv” presents the project in a video report.

Since 1896, swimming has been an event in the Olympic games. Back then it was the swimmer’s physical condition that was decisive in securing a win, but today it is mostly technique that determines who takes home the title of world champion. Researchers at Bielefeld University have developed a system that professional swimmers can use to optimize their swimming technique. The system expands the athlete’s perception and feel for the water by enabling them to hear, in real time, how the pressure of the water flows created by the swimmer changes with their movements. This gives the swimmer an advantage over his competitors because he can refine the execution of his technique. This “Swimming Sonification” system was developed at the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) of Bielefeld University. Record number of participants in International Summer German Courses

Bielefeld University attracts participants from all over the world

This year marks the third round of the International Summer German Courses and the number of participants has already tripled since their introduction – now reaching a record number of 150. “The courses were already fully booked a month before the registration deadline,” reports Heike Brandl, director of Bielefeld University’s German Language Centre PunktUm.

Getting fit and athletic – while sitting? Researchers at the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) of Bielefeld University are developing an active chair as part of the KogniHome research project. At first glance, the chair looks just like another other reclining chair with a footrest you would find in a living room in front of the TV. But upon closer inspection, the chair is actually connected to a virtual avatar and has all manner of technical refinements.

Five Humboldt fellows conduct research for drugs of tomorrow

Young scientists from all over the world: from Argentina to Ethiopia

Bielefeld University is popular among international academics, taking 11th place among 79 German universities listed in the 2014 Humboldt Rankings. Professor Norbert Sewald currently holds a record within the university: five visiting scientists of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are working on the development of drugs for various diseases in his Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry research group.

Bielefeld University’s English Drama Group presents: Pride and Prejudice

Literary classic on a modern stage 

For the English Drama Group’s 40th anniversary, the group proudly presents a stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice, written and produced by Angie Starczyk and Sabine Wolf. Performances will take place every night from Monday, July 25, to Saturday, July 30, 2016, at 9.30 p.m., in Hörsaal 7 and 12. The performances will be in English. Admission is free.

Bielefeld University joins Scholars at Risk Network

Objective: To protect the value of academic freedom 

Bielefeld University joins Scholars at Risk network (SAR). The Rektorat passed the resolution on Tuesday, 28 June. SAR is an international network of over 400 universities, research institutes and other academic organisations in 39 countries, all collaborating to protect scholars at risk and promote values, particularly academic freedom. Eleni Andrianopulu, Head of the Welcome Centre has  been chosen as the university’s main representative in the network.

CITEC Robots win World Championship

Team of Bielefeld victorious in the RoboCup finale

For the first time, the team from the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University has won RoboCup, the robotics world championship. The Team of Bielefeld secured its victory in the household service league RoboCup@Home on Sunday, 3 July. The CITEC team competed with the service robots Floka and Tobi, who were assisted by Amiro mini robots. During the competition, which took place from 30 June – 4 July 2016, the Bielefeld team triumphed over its 23 opponents. RoboCup is the world’s leading – and largest – competition for intelligent robots.
