RTG 2951 Welcomes Mercator Fellow Prof. Heidi Gottfried to Duisburg
October 1 – December 31, Duisburg
RTG 2951 Cross-Border Labour Markets is delighted to welcome Prof. Heidi Gottfried from Wayne State University, Detroit, as a Mercator Fellow from October 1 to December 31.
Prof. Gottfried is a sociologist whose research focuses on labour movements, gender, migration, and the political economy of care. Her work on global labour migration and transnational research connects closely with the interdisciplinary research agenda of RTG 2951.
As part of her research stay, Prof. Gottfried will contribute to the RTG 2951 Lecture Series: Global Migration Lecture with a talk on:
“Re-Searching Subjects: Surveying with Facebook”
In her presentation, Prof. Gottfried will explore how targeted Facebook and Instagram advertisements can be used to recruit participants for research involving traditionally hard-to-reach populations, including migrants, informal workers, and workers in isolated or unstable jobs.
Drawing on collaborative research on home care employment in the United States, she will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using social media-based recruitment to study the growing and understudied “gray market” of home care work. The presentation will also address practical questions surrounding recruitment, data collection, and data cleaning, as well as the advantages and limitations of this innovative research methodology.
The lecture is jointly organised by RTG 2951 Cross-Border Labour Markets (Bielefeld/Duisburg-Essen), InZentIM, and the Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
