Debaten sobre nuevos actores que aparecen en el mundo de las iglesias y cómo se reactivan imaginarios y expectativas religiosas en tiempos de crisis.

En la actualidad los protestantes estadounidenses y latinoamericanos aparecen en público sobre todo como actores de la derecha religiosa, mal vista por la cooperación cultural internacional, ya que, entre otras cosas, debido al aumento de la intolerancia en la política, no se pueden llevar a cabo proyectos culturales planificados, ya que los movimientos evangélicos se movilizan en su contra. Estos actores, sin embargo, constituyen sólo una parte del movimiento protestante. Otra parte del protestantismo en los EE.UU. y América Latina está muy abierta a la cooperación internacional en nombre de una paz justa. La cuestión clave del presente estudio es el potencial de paz de los actores protestantes. El concepto de paz se basa en la noción de “paz justa“, que incluye no sólo la ausencia de diversas formas de violencia, sino también la justicia social, las condiciones de vida ecológicamente sostenibles y el estado de derecho. La cuestión es si la práctica de los actores protestantes cumple estos criterios o si, por el contrario, es fundamentalista.

Latin America, United States, religion and politics – these are ingredients in a beverage of explosive power. The four terms also denote a close entanglement. Historically, this relationship has been shaped primarily by the Protestant mission in Latin America and its Pan-American objectives. But mission was yesterday. Today, under the conflictive conditions of life in Latin America, a new religious style has been molded and, with the Latin migration, the religious field in the United States is changing considerably. The present book, with reference to the Weberian distinction between “sects” and institutionalized religion, renders visible the logic of inter-American entanglements by tracing and interpreting exemplary developments and conflicts. The narrative is framed between two important religious events in 1916 and 2016.

La praxis religiosa es cada vez más relevante como respuesta a las múltiples crisis que azotan el continente. En ella encontramos tanto la complicidad con como la resistencia a los agentes de estas crisis, por lo que la complejidad del fenómeno pide herramientas adecuadas para su comprensión.

Este libro presenta un enfoque sociológico de la praxis religiosa basado en la praxeología del sociólogo francés Pierre Bourdieu. Fue desarrollado durante las tres décadas pasadas en contextos de crisis bélica y post-conflicto en sociedades latinoamericanas y del sur-este europeo.

This is a decidedly inventive and innovative study. The author does a threefold crossover: between psychoanalysis and academic psychology, between nomothetic and idiothetic research, and between North American and European cultures of knowledge. This interdisciplinary approach in the psychology of religion works out well, which does not go without saying. The complexity of the topic of religion, which becomes evident, could easily lead to an unapprehended clutter of concepts and to arbitrary setting of thematic priorities.

After an introduction which gives orientation and clarification of concepts Keller discusses aspects of religious development, of religion and personality, and of handling religious issues in psychotherapy. In all chapters exemplary quantitative and qualitative approaches and case studies are presented. This offers vistas, which broaden the view of the reader and remove method-related blinkers. Barbara Keller can do this, because she has demonstrated profound knowledge of theory and practice as empirical researcher as well as practicing psychoanalyst.   

Regarding my own field of expertise, the psychoanalytic psychology of religion, I find Barbara Keller´s work markedly well informed and well-oriented. She uses the psychoanalytic perspective in ways that develop it further and that lead to innovative results. Her readers will enjoy that her writing is clear and easy without compromising scientific differentiation.

Anika Steppacher, graduate assistant in Prof. Streib’s research project on Longitudinal Study of Religious Development in Germany and U.S.A., has received the DGS award for outstanding theses 2020 for her Master thesis entitled “Von allen Wahrheiten die Beste” (The best of all Truths). In her thesis, she studied esotericism in its subjective functions as an all-encompassing worldview. She wrote her thesis with data from this research project. Anika Steppacher has been invited to publish the results of her study in the DGS journal SOZIOLOGIE.

Die Mobilisierung von rechtsgerichteten religiösen Bewegungen zur Unterstützung von autokratischen Regimen wie etwa in Bolsonaros Brasilien oder Trumps USA stellt die durch die Aufklärung errungene Laizität des Staates in Frage. Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert die in diesen religiös-politischen Strategien inhärente identitätspolitische Logik. Nach einer Einführung zu theoretischen Aspekten von Identitätspolitiken und einer Unterscheidung von Typen religiös-politischer Strategien werden knapp besondere Charakteristika von Brasilien, Guatemala, Mexiko, Kolumbien und den USA beleuchtet. Im letzten Abschnitt wird, als Resultat der vorausgegangenen Überlegungen, das identitätspolitische Ränkespiel der religiösen Rechten mit Religionsfreiheit und Laizität entwirrt.

Nowadays, right wing religious mobilization challenges the secularity of the State, an important achievement of Enlightenment, in support of autocratic regimes as for instance Bolsonaro’s Brazil and Trump’s United States. In the present article, the author analyzes the logic of identity politics, inherent to these religious-political strategies. The article starts with reflections on theoretical aspects of identity politics and a typology of protestant actors according to their religious-political strategies. Afterwards, we briefly examine particular characteristics of Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia and the USA. As a conclusion from these observations, in the last chapter we unravel the identity-political scheming with religious liberty and secularism.

Lateinamerika, die USA, Religion und Politik sind Ingredienzien in einem Gebräu von einiger Sprengkraft. Die vier Begriffe bezeichnen Faktoren einer komplexen und über weite Strecken gewaltsamen Verflechtungsbeziehung. Historisch wird diese Beziehung zunächst von der protestantischen Mission in Lateinamerika und ihren panamerikanischen Zielen geprägt. Aber Mission war gestern. Die einst US-amerikanische Religiosität der Missionare hat unter den konfliktiven Lebensbedingungen in Lateinamerika andere, stärker charismatische Formen angenommen und ist heute von den Klassengegensätzen des Subkontinents geprägt. Das heißt allerdings nicht, dass evangelikale Organisationen nicht weiterhin auch politische Interessen des Nachbarn im Norden vertreten, oder dass, umgekehrt, politische Religiosität aus dem Süden zu ideologischen Kämpfen in den USA beiträgt – sei es durch die Theologie der Befreiung in den 1980er Jahren oder heute durch die Solidarität mit lateinamerikanischen Migranten.

Das vorliegende Buch soll helfen, die Logik dieser interamerikanischen Verflechtungen sichtbar zu machen und sie damit ein wenig zu entwirren. In einem Spannungsbogen zwischen der großen panamerikanistischen Konferenz der US-Missionen 1916 in Panama und einer Konferenz lateinamerikanischer Pfingstler 2016 zum Zweck der kritischen Prüfung des früheren Projekts zeichnet der Autor die Geschichte dieser religiös-politischen Verflechtung zwischen den Amerikas nach. Er greift dazu beispielhafte Ereignisse, Konflikte und Entwicklungen auf: von der Entstehung eines Befreiungs-Protestantismus in Brasilien über die Instrumentalisierung von Religion in den zentralamerikanischen Kriegen und den ideologischen Konflikt in den USA bis hin zum religiösen Leben in den Borderlands und zur Migration in die USA unter Trump. Dabei scheut der Autor von Fall zu Fall nicht vor einer angemessenen Portion Polemik zurück. Das Buch zeigt, die Verflechtungen haben sich verändert; ihre Sprengkraft ist geblieben.
