Species conservation poised to benefit from DNA advances

An international team including Dr Joseph Hoffman from Bielefeld University has shown that advanced DNA sequencing technologies can be used to accurately measure the levels of inbreeding in wild animal populations. The research led by Dr Joseph Hoffman of the Department of Animal Behaviour, Bielefeld University, Germany, and senior author Dr Kanchon Dasmahapatra of the Department of Biology at York, may help efforts to conserve rare species.

The number one human–robot conference in the world comes to Bielefeld

International researchers to meet in the CITEC building on the North Campus

The most important conference in the world on human–robot interaction will be held at Bielefeld University from Monday 3 to Thursday 6 March. In previous years, the ‘ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human–Robot Interaction’ (HRI) has been hosted in Tokyo (Japan), Boston (USA), and Lausanne (Switzerland).

Observing HIV and other viruses through a laser microscope

Bielefeld University acquires cutting-edge research instrument

With Bielefeld University’s new laser microscope, you can even see individual viruses. Its resolution is sufficient for objects as small as 100 nanometres –the size of such pathogens. The new instrument cost about one million Euros. The Biomolecular Photonics research group at the Faculty of Physics will be using this high-resolution widefield microscope to study transport processes and signal transmissions in living cells. One focus will be on studying how the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) spreads through the human body.
