12th Global Migration Lecture: Prof. Dr. Manuela Boatcă on Citizenship and Colonial Legacies in the Caribbean (hybrid event)
On 6 July 2026, the Research Training Group RTG 2951 invites scholars, students, and interested members of the public to the 12th Global Migration Lecture, featuring Prof. Dr. Manuela Boatcă (University of Freiburg). The lecture, entitled “Non-Sovereignty and the Coloniality of Citizenship in the Caribbean,” will take place from 16:00 to 17:45 CET at Bielefeld University and online via Zoom.
In her presentation, Boatcă examines how colonial power relations continue to shape contemporary citizenship and mobility rights in the Caribbean. Focusing on the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programmes of five former British colonies—Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia—she explores how citizenship has become a tradable asset within a deeply unequal global system. The lecture sheds light on the intersections of sovereignty, migration, and global inequality from a decolonial perspective.
Following the lecture, an interdisciplinary discussion will bring together experts from Bielefeld University and the University of Duisburg-Essen, before opening the floor to questions from the audience.
Prof. Dr. Manuela Boatcă is Professor of Sociology and Head of the Global Studies Programme at the University of Freiburg. Her research focuses on global inequalities, citizenship, decolonial theory, and the geopolitics of knowledge.
The event is organised jointly by InZentIM, CGCR, and RTG 2951.
