[Weiterlesen]BiCDaS at the Sustainable Science Café - Concept for a possible DataLab for sustainability and climate change
On Wednesday 24th January, the Sustainable Science Café will focus on questions such as what sustainable research at Bielefeld University can look like and how sustainable research initiatives can be better networked. Dr Katharina Weiß, Manager of Scientific Data Services and Managing Director of the Bielefeld Centre for Data Science (BiCDaS), will also participate and present the concept of a possible BiCDaS Sustainability and Climate Change DataLab. BiCDaS DataLabs are formats that facilitate the exchange and sharing of expertise on data-related topics. The Sustainable Science Café will start on Wednesday at 16:00 in room X-B2-103. The Sustainability Office kindly asks for a short registration by mail (nachhaltigkeitsbuero@uni-bielefeld.de).

[Weiterlesen]How to achieve digital maturity? - talk and final event of the DataLiteracy@OWL project
In our digital world, data is everywhere. Learning how to use and analyse this data is also part of it. Data literacy education in schools, universities and further education plays a crucial role. In this context, Leena Simon, net philosopher and activist, will give a talk on Wednesday 8th November at 17:30 on what digital literacy is and how it can be achieved. The title of the talk is: "Digitale Mündigkeit. Wie wir mit einer neuen Haltung die Welt retten können." After the talk in room X-E0-001, there will be an opportunity to discuss the demands of education in the digital world with media educator Prof. Dr. Dan Verständig and lawyer Prof. Dr. Daniel Antonius Hötte. This is the final event of the DataLiteracy@OWL project, and you are all cordially invited!

The publication "Einstieg ins Coding mit Jupyter Notebook - Tipps aus der Lehrpraxis" focuses on how professors can motivate students to code. Written by Marcel Gemander, coordinator of Data Literacy Education at the University of Bielefeld, the publication gives practical tips on how professors can introduce students with no previous programming experience to coding with Python. The tips focus on how teachers can use Jupyter Notebooks to help students get started programming with Python. The tips cover aspects such as how to use Jupyter Notebooks, explain how Jupyter Notebooks work, address file organisation, and show the benefits of using Jupyter Notebooks to motivate students to practice hands-on. The publication is available on the working group's website: Data Literacy of the "Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V.". In the form of a blog, the working group shares various experiences in teaching data literacy at German universities.

[Weiterlesen]BiCDaS supports the MaRDI Barcamp in July
On 4th of July, the Mathematical Research Data Initiative (MaRDI) and the NFDI Consortium for Mathematics, with the support of the Bielefeld Center for Data Science (BiCDaS), will host a bar camp on research data management in mathematics. The MaRDI Barcamp will take place at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) in Bielefeld and will provide an opportunity to exchange expertise and questions in the field of mathematics-specific research data management. At a barcamp, participants set their own topics so that the research questions and needs of the participants can be specifically addressed.
Data journalism in the context of climate catastrophe
On Tuesday the 9th of May, Anna Eschenbacher and Johanna Hartmann from the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam will be presenting their guest lecture. "Heiße Grüße aus Deutschland" at Bielefeld University. They will give an insight into data journalism in the context of the climate catastrophe in lecture hall X-E0-002 from 12 to 13 pm. The focus will be on work at the intersection of creative technologies, design and science communication.
BiCDaS talk at "Zahlen, Daten, Fritten"
As part of the digital event series "Zahlen, Daten, Fritten", Katharina Weiß (Managing Director of BiCDaS) gave a talk on "Data Gaps - and if there is no data?". The talk focused on the consequences that missing data and the resulting decisions can have on our daily lives. The "Zahlen, Daten, Fritten" event series at the University of Duisburg-Essen targets students. It addresses questions about the relevance of data literacy, careers in the field and the skills that future graduates will need.
Data Literacy in summer term 2023
In the coming summer term, there will again be a variety of seminars in the Data Literacy module. For example, the seminar "Open Minds for Open Science – Eine interdisziplinäre Einführung in Open Science" deals with the basic ideas of Open Science. The seminar "Von der Datenanalyse zur Datengeschichte - Datenanalyseergebnisse adressatengerecht kommunizieren" focuses on data storytelling. The various seminars enable students to acquire data literacy.

BiCDaS will be present at this year's Open Data Day next weekend on the 4th of March. And the Open Science Networks Bielefeld will also be there. The event "VIRTUAL OPEN DATA WELT" is part of the Open Data Day and is organised by the Digitalisation Office of the City of Bielefeld. The event can be found at open.digitalsein.com.
