International Workshop 'Fictitious Commodities Revisited: Enquiries into the Great Transformations of Market Socialism' Successfully Organised
From 8 to 10 April 2026, the international workshop ‘Fictitious Commodities Revisited: Enquiries into the Great Transformations of Market Socialism' took place as part of the ERC-funded research project FinancialLives.
The event brought together more than 40 researchers from Asia, North America and Europe, and was well attended by members of the Faculty of Sociology. Together, they explored wide-ranging market transformations in China, Laos and Vietnam and their implications for the lives of working people.
The workshop was opened with a welcome address by Prof. Oliver Flügel-Martinsen, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology, followed by a keynote lecture by Prof. Erik Harms (Yale University). Over the following days, seven panels discussed the changing accumulation regimes, transforming property relations, commodification in relations to nature and ecology, time and life, local configurations of risk, moralities of commodification, as well as dynamics of aspiration and disenchantment.
