"RIGHT-WING POPULISM IN TURKEY AND ITS INFLUENCES ON EUROPE AND GERMANY” CONFERENCE: A REVIEW

Veröffentlicht am 15. Mai 2020, 10:07 Uhr

IKG organized "Right-wing Populism in Turkey and its influences on Europe and Germany" Conference on January 22, 2020, at Bielefeld University, as part of the lately initiated project of "Transnational Influences, Migrant Identities, and Social Cohesion" (TransMIGZ). The conference was aimed to make room for further discussions on whether a transnational right-wing populism can be influential over diverse communities in European countries, particularly Germany. The conference provided an in-depth outlook to the right-wing populist discourse mostly mounting from the ruling political party in Turkey (Justice and Development Party / AKP) and enabled discussions on how this right-wing populist discourse would influence and mobilize the Turkish origin communities with Turkish descent in of Germany. While the conference theoretically focused on the transnational manifestations of populism, the discourses that firmly entrenched to nationalism were also clear which is not surprising regarding the close relationship between populism and nationalism.
