BGHS Evaluation Results 2016

Veröffentlicht am 21. June 2017

In 2016 the BGHS has undergone a voluntary evaluation for the second time since 2010. The evaluation aims are to identify BGHS’ strengths and weaknesses. The results of the multi-layered process will fuel the further development of the institution. Thereby perspectives for the continuation after the funding of the excellence initiative runs out in October 2019 are gathered.

The Multistage Evaluation Process

In January / February 2016 the BGHS staff conducted an online survey poll of their doctoral researchers. More than two thirds participated. Subsequently interviews with academic supervisors took place in April and May 2016. Both assessments lay the groundwork for the report Obtaining a doctorate at the BGHS. Report on the findings of the 2016 evaluation survey. On Friday 11 November five experts on the subject of graduate education were invited for an inspection. Prepared with the aid of the above mentioned report they were able to survey the BGHS for themselves. Among others the experts had conversations with doctoral researchers, supervising professors as well as BGHS board members and the vice-rector for research, young researchers and equal opportunities. In addition a tour of the BGHS grounds gave an impression of the surroundings. Based on these various findings the group of experts drafted a ten pages long evaluation report.

Results of the Evaluation

The report highlights the strengths of the BGHS, for example the international networking, the encouragement and funding of mobility, the interdisciplinary communication, the program in general and the infrastructure. But the experts also made recommendations for further improvements. According to them the interdisciplinary communication could be stronger, especially between professors. To the University Directorate the group suggests the continuation of the BGHS and praise it as a suitable model for the University in general.

The evaluation was discussed with the vice-rector for research, young researchers and equal opportunities, representatives of doctoral researchers and the BGHS board. One first step to realize emerged suggestions is the Interdisciplinary Dialogue. This exchange by members of both faculties to one topic will have its premiere on the eve of the Annual Seminar on 12 July 2017. This year’s talking point will be “Grappling with the Global”.
