Rare are many - International Rare Disease Day
300 million people worldwide are affected by a rare disease. That's 1 in 20, so rare is not rare! This year is a very special Rare Disease Day, because today is the rarest International Rare Disease Day.
Around 80% of rare diseases are hereditary. They are chronic and are sometimes accompanied by severe mental and physical impairments. Many symptoms are already present in childhood. Despite this, it takes an average of almost five years for a rare disease to be recognized and diagnosed.
Treatment and specialists are rare, and there is still no known cure for most rare diseases. This presents those affected and their families with major challenges in everyday life.
With Rare Disease Day, we can contribute to expanding knowledge about rare diseases and focus on the needs of those affected for more research, networked and appropriate care and acknowledgement in society and in the workplace.
All over the world, people are lighting up windows in the colors of this year's campaign: pink, blue, green and purple. Monuments and landmarks are also shining in these colors today. Get involved and raise awareness for the many rare people!
