An informative visit: Working Group 3 of the Faculty of Education at the ZAB
On 23 January 2023, the lecturers of Working Group 3 (AG3) of the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University visited Accessibility Services (ZAB - Zentrale Anlaufstelle Barrierefrei) to learn more about its tasks and goals and to get to know the ZAB's services for students and employees with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
The focus was on the workrooms for students on the ZAB corridor. Markus Paulußen, ZAB's accessibility officer, showed the group assistive technologies in the Louis Braille room, e.g. screen readers at the computer workstations, Braille displays and Braille printers, as well as the magnification device, which enables people with visual impairments to enlarge texts individually or to have them read aloud. Afterwards, we went to the Theresia Degener room, which is specially designed for people who need an environment that is as free of disturbances as possible in which to work. Students can take exams here, for example. With these rooms, the ZAB supports the self-study of students with disabilities or chronic illnesses who, due to their disabilities, require a particularly low-stimulus environment or assistive technologies.
Furthermore, it was explained that the ZAB offers a wide range of information and counselling services for students and staff with and without disabilities or chronic illnesses. These include individual counselling, the implementation of digital accessibility in studies and teaching as well as in technology and administration. Contributions to research and development of accessible technologies and the design of an accessible university are also part of the ZAB expertise. Of particular interest were concrete questions from the visitors to Melanie Moor, the student advisor at the ZAB, on how to support students with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Ms Moor provided detailed information on topics such as compensation for disadvantages and other support options.
Our visitors were impressed by the extensive range of services offered by the ZAB and its important contribution to promoting equal opportunities in studying.
The visit undoubtedly helped to raise awareness of the many aspects of accessibility at the university and to make the challenges of students with disabilities or chronic illnesses more concrete. Last but not least, the ZAB also benefits from the feedback of the lecturers and learns from the questions of our visitors where lecturers are challenged to address the special needs of their students. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in WG3 and are pleased that so many of you came!
If you would also like to find out about the possibilities of the ZAB on site, you can request a guided tour of the workrooms and the ZAB at any time by sending an email to zab@uni-bielefeld.de. We look forward to seeing you! We look forward to seeing you!
