The historian Martina Kessel is the new Vice President for International Affairs and Corporate Communication
After her election by Bielefeld University Council, the Senate confirmed today that the historian Professor Dr. Martina Kessel is the new Vice President for International Affairs and Corporate Communication. She is taking over from the educational scientist Professor Dr. Sabine Andresen who left the University this summer semester.
Martina Kessel studied history, political science, and American studies in Cologne, Munich, and at the University of Maryland in College Park, USA (Master of Arts). After gaining her PhD at the LMU Munich, she took her postdoctoral habilitation at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1998. Since 1998, she has been Professor of Modern History and Gender History at Bielefeld University. She specializes in research on 19th and 20th century German and European history with a particular emphasis on 20th century international relations, cultural and gender history from the 18th to the 20th century, war and violence in modern times, identity formation through inclusion and exclusion in modern societies, and theoretical issues. She has been much acclaimed for, among others, her book Langeweile. Zum Umgang mit Zeit und Gefühlen in Deutschland vom späten 18. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert [Boredom: Handling time and feelings in Germany from the late 18th to the early 20th century].
Rektor Professor Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Sagerer is delighted by the choice of the new Vice President: "As a highly respected scientist, Martina Kessel is both a creative and committed personality. She already showed an international orientation during her studies, and she has extended this systematically throughout her scientific career. This makes her exceptionally suitable for the 'International" sector. I am greatly looking forward to working with her"!
