New: Temporary Main Entrance and new pedestrian routes
Fencing off for the first construction phase
From Monday 16 February, both the Main Entrance to the Main Building of the university and the previous women’s car park will be closed. From this date to the end of March, the site will be prepared for the first construction phase. Extensive fencing will be erected around the outside of Sections A, B, K, S, and R. As a result, many of you will have to change the ways you enter and leave the university. Part of the first modernization phase is to provide the university with a completely new entrance area over the next few years.
Side entrance C/D will become the new (temporary) main entrance “Haupteingang (interim)”
During the first construction phase, the university will have a temporary main entrance: the side entrance C/D is being specially converted for this purpose. The bicycle stands have already been moved to this location.
Barrier-free access
Initially, wheelchair users will be able to carry on entering the Main Building through the door to the right of the previous Main Entrance. Throughout the first construction phase, a new barrier-free entrance and exit will be provided in Section C, Zugang Betriebsarzt, Fachsprachenzentrum und KontaktStube [Entry for University Medical Service, Language Centre, and Merchandising Shop]. Work on this will also begin in the next few days.
From the tram line to the university
The pedestrian route from the tram line is being changed. From now on, the only way to the Main Building and Building X will be over the footbridge. The pedestrian route below the bridge will soon be closed off by mobiel because the transport services can no longer ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing the tram lines here.
Parking spaces
The women’s car park will also be closed during the construction measures. This area will be part of the construction site. The three multi-storey car parks on the other side of Universitätsstraße can be used as an alternative. Signposted parking spaces for women are located on the top parking level of Parkhaus 3 (next to Building X). A new pedestrian crossing should ensure that parkers can safely cross the Universitätsstraße from the car parks to the Main Building. The pedestrian crossing will be installed as soon as weather conditions permit.
The contractor Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW (BLB) will be modernizing the University Main Building in a sequence of six construction phases over the next few years. As the owner of the building, the BLB is also the modernization contractor. Further information on the modernization plans (in German) is available online at:
