Bielefeld University popular among international researchers
11th place in ranking by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
Bielefeld University is high up in the 2014 Humboldt Rankings: In the overall ranking of German universities, Bielefeld University comes 11th out of 79. It is now number two in North Rhine-Westphalia behind Bonn University.
Bielefeld University takes fifth place in the international researchers’ order of preference. Engineers also rate the University highly: here, Bielefeld University ranks 9th.
The rankings are published by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which awards fellowships for research stays to foreign academics. The fellows decide themselves which German university they wish to attend. The rankings were based on the research stays of fellowship holders between 2009 and 2013. In order to determine the Humboldt Rankings, the number of research stays by top international researchers and junior researchers who have conducted research in Germany in the last five years in connection with a fellowship or award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are counted. To avoid statistical bias arising from differences in the size of the host institutes, the rankings relate the number of research stays to the number of professors at the respective university.
