Wild Guys at Linie 4
What do sanatoriums and zoos have in common? Franz Kather explores this question in the public lecture series Linie 4, organised by the BGHS together with the vhs Bielefeld. In his lecture "'Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen' - der Südpalast und das Wissen über Krankheit, Mensch und Natur im 19. Jahrhundert" he tells of the parallels between the sanatorium and the zoo at the time of their creation and traces the common origins of medical and zoological knowledge. The example of the “Südpalast (south palace)” is used to illuminate how knowledge about people, animals and the world influenced each other and what role architecture played in this.
Franz Kather studied English/American Studies, Psychology and History of Science at the University of Jena and has been working on his PhD in History at the BGHS since 2018. His research interests lie in the history of science, media and technology and social theoretical spatial studies. He is a speaker and on the board of the young researchers' network INSIST Science and Technology Studies.
The lecture will take place on Monday, 22 November 2021 at 6.15 pm in the Murnau-Saal at the vhs Bielefeld, Ravensberger Park 1. The event will be held in German.
