Mental Health First Aiders at the ZAB

Published on 19. October 2023
In numerous counseling sessions, employees at the ZAB deal with the topic of mental and psychological health among students and employees of Bielefeld University on a daily basis. In keeping with the "Mental Health Week" from October 10 to 20, 2023, two people at ZAB have trained to become Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) first responders.

In this regard, it is particularly important to us at ZAB to recognize mental health problems, take them seriously, and be able to provide appropriate "first aid" in the form of support services. With a comprehensive network, we are able to specifically refer to helpful contact persons and counseling centers or institutions within or outside our university. It is important to note that 25 percent of students report impairments, of which 60 percent have mental health disorders. These issues may include depression, psychosis, or anxiety disorders. In acute crisis situations, we are prepared to recognize them and act in a supportive manner.

The goal is to promote and protect mental health at Bielefeld University. Together, we work to provide the best possible support for students and employees to manage mental health issues and make the university a healthier place for all.
