AI and Art - Exhibition "Latent Space Agency" by Moritz Wehrmann
With the exhibition "Latent Space Agency" by ZiF Artist in Residence 2022 Moritz Wehrmann, visitors are immersed in the concept of "latent space" - a space of possibilities and voids that leads into a dimension beyond our everyday understanding of logic and world contexts. Moritz Wehrmann questions the nature of spaces and dimensions, be it in the mathematical representation of a high-dimensional space in AI models, in the relations of the media used and thematized or in the physical, sensually perceptible space. In latent spaces, as in Moritz Wehrmann's works, the incoherent is connected and opens up new perspectives.
In his works, Wehrmann explores these leaps and unexpected connections, identifies extremes and explores boundaries. In the course of this intuitive cartography, the unexpected and the unintentional become intentional, the signifier and the signified merge, and transitions between latent and physical spaces are revealed and concealed. Similar to the works of Land Art, questions arise about authorship and the time and energy that these new visual worlds consume - often only at second glance.
During his ZiF residency in summer 2022, Moritz Wehrmann focused on AI models of image and text generation and ZiF as a place of diversity. As an interdisciplinary research center, it not only offers a broad spectrum of content input, but is also a place of multi-layered creative development - in other words, a thoroughly latent, i.e. opportunity-generating space.
