Up to 40th place among the best young universities in the world
Bielefeld University second-best German higher education institute in the international Times Higher Education Ranking
Bielefeld University is one of the best young universities in the world according to the latest ‘100 under 50’ ranking by Times Higher Education (THE). The ranking assesses universities throughout the world that were founded less than 50 years ago. Compared to last year, Bielefeld University, founded in 1969, has moved up two places to Rank 40. Apart from Bielefeld, there are just three other German higher education institutes among the top 100 – only the University of Konstanz has a higher ranking.
Bielefeld University scored particularly through the very high number of citations for its scholars. It also stood out in terms of international outlook with its students, teachers, and researchers from all over the world and its international research cooperations. Rektor Professor Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Sagerer said: ‘I am delighted with this excellent result. Compared to 2012, we have improved in all categories. Such good rankings make our young Bielefeld University internationally visible as an outstanding location for research and teaching. It shows how attractive we are for scientists and students from all over the world.’
Every year, the British higher education and research journal Times Higher Education (THE) publishes its highly renowned ‘World University Rankings’. These rank universities according to 13 performance indicators placing particular emphasis on their academic prestige. This is one of the reasons why older established universities are often ranked higher than their younger competitors that are still building up their reputation. In order to determine the current excellence and future potential of these ‘rising stars’, the THE has been ranking them separately since last year. Whereas the weighting given to reputation has been reduced, the other performance indicators remain unchanged.
