New Marie Curie Network in economics

Bielefeld University to coordinate the ExSIDE programme; six nations participating

With roughly 3.8 million Euros over the next four years, the European Commission is funding a new Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network in the field of economics at Bielefeld University. The topic: How do expectations come about and what role do they play in economic decisions and economic policymaking? An example: I’ve been offered a job, but it does not pay that well. Should I take the job anyway? Or do I expect to find a job elsewhere that will pay better? The name of the programme ExSIDE stands for ‘Expectations and Social Influence Dynamics in Economics’.

In the programme, a total of fifteen young academics will be carrying out research and working on their doctorates at a combination of two out of eight European partner universities: Bielefeld University, the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), University College London (England), the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Milano (Italy), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France), University of Surrey (England), and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy).

What’s special about the project is that it will not just address questions with the traditional methods of economics but also apply interdisciplinary approaches from psychology, network theory, and computer simulation. Bielefeld University’s Faculty of Business Administration and Economics will be coordinating the joint project with seven other European universities.

‘ExSIDE offers young people the unique chance to work together with various experienced economists even while they are still doing their doctoral studies; and to gain a Joint Doctoral Degree from two of the leading European universities in this field,’ explains the network coordinator, Professor Herbert Dawid. ‘All the young academics will spend several months with our very interesting non-academic partners such as central banks, consulting firms, or start-ups; and they will be specifically groomed for the academic and non-academic labour market.’ Six of the fifteen ExSIDE young academics will be taking their doctorates at the Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management (BiGSEM).

The Marie Curie Networks are one of the main pillars in the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme for excellence in science and innovation. In previous rounds, far more than 1,500 applications were made from throughout the EU. This year, fewer than seven per cent of the applications were successful. Including this new network, Bielefeld University is now participating in a total of six Marie Curie Networks and it is heading two of them as coordinator.

Marie Curie Networks at Bielefeld University:
ExSIDE - Expectations and Social Influence Dynamics in Economics (Coordination)
MAGICBULLET - Peptide-Drug Conjugates for Targeted Delivery in Tumor Therapy (Coordination)
BIOCASCADES - Sustainable and Scalable Biocatalytic Cascade Reactions Training Network (Participation as partner)
CACHE - Calcium in a Changing Environment (Participation as partner)
LANPERCEPT - Language and Perception (Participation as partner)
TOLLERANT - Toll-Like Receptor 4 activation and function in diseases: an integrated chemical-biology approach (Participation as partner)
