Martin Carrier, Professor of Philosophy joins the Academia Europaea, The Academy of Europe
Dr. Martin Carrier, Professor of Philosophy at Bielefeld University's Faculty of History, Philosophy, and Theology, has been appointed to the Academia Europaea, The Academy of Europe in the Section Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies. Founded in Cambridge in 1988, the Academia Europaea aims to promote learning, education, and research in Europe and to strengthen interdisciplinary and international academic exchange.
Professor Dr. Martin Carrier was born in 1955. He studied physics, philosophy, and education at the University of Münster, and went on to work at the University of Konstanz until 1994, gaining his post-doctoral habilitation in philosophy there in 1989. In 1994, he became a Professor at Heidelberg University before moving to Bielefeld in 1998 as Professor of Philosophy in the Faculty of History, Philosophy, and Theology. He is a member of the University Council and a director of the Institute of Science and Technology Studies (IWT) at Bielefeld University. In 2008, he won the German Research Foundation's (DFG) Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Programme.
The approximately 2000 members of the Academia Europaea are leading experts from all academic fields. These scientists and scholars come from 35 European and 8 non-European countries and include 38 Nobel Prize winners. European scientists are proposed by the nomination sub-committee and confirmed by the Academia Council before being invited to join.
Along with the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur [Academy of sciences and Literature] in Mainz, this is the third Academy to which Martin Carrier has been appointed.
Other members of the Academia Europaea from Bielefeld University are Professor Dr. Hartmut von Hentig and Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Achim Müller.
