Evaluation by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Successful introduction of seven dual degree courses with partner universities in Europe, excellent promotion of young academics, and exemplary financial management – the German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) evaluation of the Erasmus+ Programme from 2015 to 2017 has awarded Bielefeld University 97 out of a possible total of 100 points. As a result, the Bielefeld implementation of Erasmus+ will serve as a future example of best practice in Germany for both the European Union and European partners.

The DAAD is the national agency in Germany responsible for cooperation between universities in the EU. Its evaluation of the Erasmus+ Mobility Project at Bielefeld University emphasizes the University’s above-average commitment to creating a European higher education space and thereby increasing its international competitiveness. On the administrative level, work has been ‘very transparent and organized’. The implementation from 2015 to 2017 of the Erasmus Charta for Higher Education (ECHE) – the quality framework of the Programme – has also been ‘excellent’. The DAAD sums up the outcome of these efforts: ‘Participants’ reports reflect the complete satisfaction of the students (incomings and outgoings) with their mobility’. The DAAD already awarded the Erasmus Quality certificate to Bielefeld University in 2012.

Erasmus+ is the EU Programme to promote general and vocational training, youth, and sport in Europe. It enables international students from elsewhere in Europe to study at Bielefeld University and for Bielefeld’s own students to do part of their studies in a European foreign country. In addition, the opportunities for continued education and advanced training in Erasmus+ offer both non-academic and academic staff at Bielefeld University a chance to gain experience abroad or to carry out a guest lectureship in another European country.
