Rector Gerhard Sagerer thanks everybody ‘who has contributed to this splendid outcome’

Bielefeld University has made a great leap forward in the new Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking that was published last week (11.09.2019): from Rank 250 to Rank 166. The British academic journal THE compares 1,400 universities across 92 countries in the world.

After already landing at Rank 20 in the THE Ranking of 350 young universities worldwide, this is another great success to mark Bielefeld University’s 50th anniversary. ‘I thank everybody who has contributed to this splendid outcome,’ says Gerhard Sagerer, the rector of Bielefeld University.

This is the sixteenth time that the journal ‘Times Higher Education’ (THE) has published the ranking. It is based on 13 indicators that are distributed across five categories and differ strongly in the way they are weighted:  quality of teaching, research reputation, citations, knowledge transfer to industry, and the proportion of foreign academics and students.

The current international ranking is headed by the University of Oxford in Great Britain; the best German university in the international comparison is Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) (Rank 32). Bielefeld University is Number 19 in Germany and Number 4 in North Rhine-Westphalia.
