Bielefeld: Among the best young universities in the world
Results of the Times Higher Education Rankings
An international ranking by Times Higher Education (THE) set out to identify the ‘rising stars of the global academy’ and found Bielefeld University. The ‘100 under 50’ rankings list universities throughout the world that are less than 50 years old. Bielefeld University, founded in 1969, gained 42nd place, profiting particularly from the work of its scholars being cited so frequently.
Only four of Germany‘s 39 young state universities have made it into the top 100 of the THE ranking. Number one is Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech), South Korea, followed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), China.
Every year, the British higher education and research journal Times Higher Education (THE) publishes its highly renowned ‘World University Rankings’. These rank universities according to 13 performance indicators placing particular emphasis on their academic prestige. This is one of the reasons why older established universities are often ranked higher than their younger competitors still building up their reputation. In order to determine the current excellence and future potential of these ‘rising stars’, the THE has ranked them separately. The weighting given to reputation has been reduced, whereas the other performance indicators remain unchanged.
