250,000 Euro for international research cooperation
Renowned expert on sociological inequality research comes to Bielefeld
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has granted the Anneliese Maier Research Award to the American sociologist Donald Tomaskovic-Devey. The 250,000 Euro award will be used to fund the research cooperation with Bielefeld University’s Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 882 ‘From Heterogeneities to Inequalities’. One of Tomaskovic-Devey’s projects will be to help build up an international research network on explanations for the causes of social inequalities. The sociologist is one of eight award winners announced on 17.12.2013 by the Humboldt Foundation.
The Bielefeld sociology professor Stefan Liebig had nominated the American for the award. ‘I’m delighted that my nomination of Donald Tomaskovic-Devey has been a success. This will be the first Anneliese Maier Research Award winner to come to Bielefeld. He is one of the internationally most renowned researchers in the field of sociological inequality research. The cooperation over the next five years will also increase the international visibility of sociology at Bielefeld and of our work on studying the causes and consequences of social inequality. The award contributes to building up Bielefeld University as a centre of sociological inequality research.’ In his work, Donald Tomaskovic-Devey is developing a theory of social inequalities that can be tested empirically; a theory that names the exact determinants of the unequal distribution of income, education, or even opportunities on the labour market and the consequences this has for both the individual and society.
The Anneliese Maier Research Award is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and aims to promote the internationalization of the humanities and social sciences in Germany. The eight award winners were chosen out of a total of 60 nominations from 17 different nations.
