18:00 – 20:00 h: Manuel Vásquez: Transnacionalization of religion. Colloquium CIAS.
Room X-E0-209
http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/cias/studium/kolloquium.html
In this workshop, we will focus on current empirical trends with regard to religious praxis in the Latin and Anglo American societies as well as in transnational perspective. Both in Anglo and in Latin America, religious praxis is the crucial mediating force between private and public life. The upsurge of religious activity in the last decades turns religion even more relevant. The increase of migration and the transnational media presence of neoliberal logics are mediated partly by religious praxis. In the religious field, a strong Pentecostal movement challenges a re-invigorating Catholic Church. Social protest often is expressed by religious means – not least by revitalizing indigenous movements. These and other topics will be discussed in this workshop.

Workshop Theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of religion. June 29th, 9:00 – 17:00 Room X - A2 - 103
In this workshop, theory and method in sociology of religious praxis are in the focus. Manuel Vásquez is well known not only for important advancements in the theory of transnational religiosity but also as the author of the materialist theory of religion “More than belief”. Hugo José Suárez is a student of Pierre Bourdieu and has concentrated his research on visual sociology as well as on semiotic analysis. Heinrich Wilhelm Schäfer and his team are developing a praxeological theory of religion and corresponding methods drawing on Bourdieu’s general sociology.
Persons who are interested in presenting a topical contribution – for example from a Systems Theory, Post Colonial, or any other theoretical approach to religion – 10 to 15 minutes during the afternoon, please contact cp.buitrago@uni-bielefeld.de.
