Memories Remembered, Episode 2: Memorials and the Active Act of Remembrance
Developed from the intensive seminar "Commemorating Mass Violence: Memorial Sites in Germany, Israel, Rwanda and Ukraine," the Memories Remembered podcast series offers a critical and experiential exploration of collective memory.
Episode 2 explores the meaning and evolution of memorials, with reflections anchored in site visits to Berlin, Bergen-Belsen, and Stalag 326. Participants discuss the tension between historical memory and daily life, balancing respect for sites of death with the need to keep them active through education and community participation. Featured themes include the “culture of remembrance,” the concept of counter-memorials, and the crucial involvement of new generations in preserving victims' memory by transforming remembrance into a collective and active act.
