Lecture Series Recommendation by Hannah von Legat: "The (Ab)use of the Medieval Past"
"The (Ab)use of the Medieval Past" lecture series from organizers: Christoph Dartmann, Cordelia Heß, Sita Steckel
Nationalist and far-right actors frequently employ medieval narratives – from Friedrich Barbarossa to Leif Eriksson, from the crusades to the Hanseatic League. The lectures in this series examine exemplary narratives of the extreme right within a European context and shed light on their mutual relation with popular knowledge and myths about the Middle Ages. My personal favourite lecture is “Geschichte als Ahnenkult” by archaeologist and historian Karin Reichenbach, which explores Viking reenactment and neopaganism in Germany and Poland.
