Book recommendation by Anastasia Serikova: "Smoke, Mirrors, and Memories: Legacies of the Soviet-Afghan War" from Jeffrey W. Jones
Jeffrey W. Jones: Smoke, Mirrors, and Memories: Legacies of the Soviet-Afghan War (2025)
At the heart of this book are the complexities of the Soviet–Afghan War, as seen through the eyes of those who were involved. Jeffery W. Jones conveys a broad picture, acknowledging the narrative illusion of a seamless story amid the fog of war, and analyzes varied accounts relayed by a wide range of sources. He argues that, amid propaganda and disinformation from all sides attempting to shape perceptions of the war, narratives and discourses on the war in the latter half of the 1980s helped pave the way for the collapse of the USSR, as disillusionment with the conflict grew within Soviet society.
