On 01 April 2017 six new doctoral researchers started their work at the BGHS as new employees. The three sociologists and three historians applied for the announced doctoral positions of the BGHS at the end of 2016. They managed to be successful in a multistage selection process with more than one hundred applicants.

One of them is the sociologist Aanor Roland from France. She will research the topic “Tax governance in the European Union: Explaining the post-crisis answer of the EU towards corporate tax avoidance” and looks forward to her time of doctoral work at Bielefeld University – just as her colleagues, the sociologists Edvaldo de Aguiar Portela Moita from Brazil and Mehran Haji Mahammadian from Iran. While Edvaldo Moita, who works on “Influxes of Subinclusion in the Construction of constitutional fields of Illegalities”, is new at the BGHS, Mehran Haji has already gained experiences as a Start-up Scholar in 2016. The funding programme, which supports international MA-graduates, convinced him to work on his dissertation topic “The Rise of Retirement in Iran. A Movement from Margin of Social Policy to Center?” here in Bielefeld.

The historian Sisay Megersa Dirirsa from Ethiopia was also a Start-up Scholar at the BGHS in 2016, to work on his exposé for his current research project ”Ethiopia as a supra national state? An inquiry into the space of Contemporary Ethiopian History”. Now he is able to realize the research project, financed by the BGHS. Theresa Hornischer can also look upon a similar story of success. The historian was a participant of the BGHS Shortcut programme in winter semester 2015/16 and applied subsequently to a doctoral position at the BGHS. As a new member of the BGHS, she will turn her attention on ”‘Les écrivaines-voyageuses‘ – Reisende Frauen als Intellektuelle in der Zwischenkriegszeit in Frankreich am Beispiel von Léo Wanner.” – A research project about travelling intellectual women in the interwar period in France on the example of Léo Wanner.

The interwar period is also the topic of her colleague Ina Kiel. The historian will write her dissertation about “Fernand Desprès. Ein engagierter Aktivist in internationalen Zirkeln während der Zwischenkriegszeit – Un militant engagé dans des cercles internationaux pendant l’entre-deux-guerres “ – an activist in international networks during the interwar period.
