From Ideas to Impact: Bridging the Gap for Future Doctoral Researchers
At the BGHS, we are always looking for ways to support aspiring researchers in the social sciences and humanities. That’s why we’re excited to launch the 2025 edition of “Bridging the Gap: Doctoral Proposal Development Programme” for International Master’s Students and graduates!
Starting in March, five outstanding master’s students and graduates from emerging and developing countries will embark on an enriching journey to develop their doctoral research proposals. Over the course of eight online sessions, they’ll refine their research ideas, learn about the German academic system, and explore funding opportunities—all while connecting with peers and scholars from Bielefeld University.
This year, we are proud to have five talented participants from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds:
Ahmet Zahit Ekren (Turkey) – Exploring how mortuary work mediates political and religious identities in Vienna’s diverse Alevi and Sunni Muslim communities.

Alexandra Leca (Romania) – Investigating how Romanian seasonal workers represent themselves on TikTok.

Kamagate Fetigue Abass (Côte d’Ivoire) – Studying the socio-political mechanisms of justice in post-conflict reconciliation in West Africa.

Ankita (India) – Mapping how migration networks, technology, and agency shape the gendered futures of women.

Anis Saadat (Iran) – Examining how Iranian women navigate identity and freedom on social media, from hijab to hashtag.

Through Bridging the Gap, these researchers will gain valuable insights into academic life in Germany and take meaningful steps toward their PhD journeys. We look forward to seeing how their ideas evolve and how they contribute to global academic discussions!
