Doctoral Thesis Award

On 21 July, the Bielefeld University Society (UGBi) presented awards for the best doctoral theses at Bielefeld University. BGHS alumna Zhenwei Wang was also honoured for her thesis.

In her thesis, entitled ‘The Gender and Class Dynamics of Families on the Move: An Ethnography of Translocal Kinning and Caregiving in Contemporary China’, Zhenwei displays that migration does not simply dissolve family relationships. Instead, Chinese families maintain their relationships across great distances through visits, financial support, storytelling and digital monitoring. These practices create new forms of care and support, but also reflect inequalities in terms of gender, generation and social background.
