BGHS Welcome Day Summer Term 2016

On Wednesday, 13 April 2016, the BGHS welcomed nine new doctoral researchers – seven historians and two sociologists. They successfully applied for the doctoral programme and will start working on their thesis projects in summer term 2016. The research projects of the new colleagues range from ancient history to contemporary history and from sociology of migration to sociology of education.

List of the new doctoral researchers and their dissertation projects

  • Teresa Büchsel: Procedures of Legal Protection Status Attribution: The constribution of bureaucratic identities in judicial asylum procedures - a socio-legal investigation

  • Marcus B. Carrier: Methodenwahl in der forensischen Chemie bzw. Toxikologie in den deutschen Staaten und Frankreich des 19. Jahrhunderts im Vergleich

  • Peter-David Friedrich: Kunst lesen. Eine Untersuchung von Ausstellungstexten vom 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart

  • Teresa Gärtner: Kontroverse Geschichtskultur(en). Die kritische Narration der "Geschichte von Unten"

  • Julian Gieseke: Die Errichtung einer Territorialherrschaft auf Sizilien durch die Tyrannen von Syrakus im 5. und 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

  • Theresa Hornischer: "Les écrivaines-voyageuses" - Reisende Frauen als Intellektuelle in der Zwischenkriegszeit in Frankreich am Beispiel von Léo Wanner

  • Stella Pölkemann: Der Bürostuhl - ein Objekt der Moderne. Zwischen Ästhetisierung, Ergonomisierung und Rationalisierung. 1890-1990

  • Jacob Reilley: Organizing Moral Uncertainty: A Study of How German Universities Deal with Dual Use Research of Concern

  • Kerstin Schulte: Die Entstehung der "Volksgemeinschaft" hinter Stacheldraht. Die Internierungslager in der britischen und amerikanischen Besatzungszone, 1945-1950

Start-up Scholars and Visiting Fellows

In addition to the new doctoral researchers, the BGHS also welcomed six Start-up Scholars and four Visiting Fellows as guests in Summer Term 2016. The three women and seven men have successfully applied for the two guest-fellowship programmes.

The Start-up Scholars from Ethiopia, Hungary, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Russia use their four-month stay at the BGHS to develop exposés for their planned dissertation projects. For this, the two women and four men undergo a training programme consisting of colloquia, writing workshops and coaching. They will also present their research projects on 22 June 2016 at 3 pm in the BGHS Seminar Room. The event is called Meet the Start-ups.

The four Visiting Fellows from Croatia, Poland and Romania – two historians and two sociologists – will use their time at the BGHS to work on their dissertation projects.

The four young scholars are doing their doctorates at the University of Warsaw and at the Central European University in Budapest. Their topics concern military elites in the Late Western Roman Empire, the representation of masculinity in Ukrainian politics in the 19th century, economic nationalism and the welfare state in Central and Eastern Europe and the transformation of ideology terms over generations.

In addition to their research, the Visiting Fellows will use their stay at the BGHS to get in contact with the local doctoral researchers at the BGHS in order to build up new networks in the science community and develop their research.
Within the BGHS-event Meet the Fellows on 27 April at 2 pm, the Visiting Fellows will present their research projects in the BGHS Seminar Room. All members of the BGHS are cordially invited.
