Award-winning Doctoral Theses

The Bielefeld University Society (UGBi) awarded prizes for the best doctoral theses at Bielefeld University on 5 May. Two BGHS alumni were also honoured for their doctoral theses.

In his sociological doctoral thesis "The World of Anti-Semitism. Historical-sociological reflections on anti-Semitism in global society", Marc Jacobsen analysed how anti-Semitism has developed into a global ideology since the late 19th century. He came to the conclusion that the formation of a universal enemy image formed the central starting point for transnational actions.

In his doctoral thesis "Genetic and Social Influences on Educational Attainment", Mirko Ruks analysed the interplay of genetic and social influences on educational success. Among other things, he worked out how the genetic influence varies with social background and how children from socially better-off families can achieve higher educational success despite a lower genetic predisposition.

Mirko is currently working as a postdoc in the 'TwinLife' project in the Faculty of Sociology.
