The BGHS is pleased about the 150th completed dissertation project. On 17 July 2017 sociologist Dennis Walkenhorst successfully defended his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University. Dennis Walkenhorst submitted a dissertation entitled Widerstand, Wohlfahrt, Welt im Spiegel. Zur Persistenz islamistischer Bewegungen im Nahen Osten: Eine systemtheoretische Analyse von Hamas und Hisbollah [Persistence of Islamist Movements in the Middle East]. It offers an innovative approach and uses system theory to explain the self-preservation of the Islamist movements Hamas and Hezbollah on several levels of analysis and their long-term structural ›success‹. The first- and second supervisors of the doctorate are Prof. em. Dr. Klaus Japp und Prof. Dr. Volker Kruse (both from Bielefeld University).
With the defence Dennis Walkenhorst officially joins the list of the BGHS Alumni. For an overview of other Alumni of BGHS and descriptions of their dissertation projects, please see: http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/(en)/bghs/Personen/Alumni/index.html
