10. Annual Seminar: Report

From 5 to 7 July the 10th Annual Seminar took place at the BGHS, this time about: Inclusion/Exclusion: New Perspectives in History and Sociology. During the conference young researchers from all over the world discussed for three days the concept of Inclusion/Exclusion and its approaches in different contexts. The conference aimed to define and specify Inclusion and Exclusion in terms of time, space, theory and methodology.
The programme
Welcome adress by deputy director Prof. Dr. Thomas Welskopp.
The deputy director of the BGHS Prof. Dr. Thomas Welskopp welcomed the participants of the conference, especially the keynote-speaker and the young researchers who came to Bielefeld from abroad to attend the conference. Johanna Paul, as part of the organizing team, gave an introduction into the programme. Afterwards, the first keynote lecture started.

After a lunch break, the programme continued with four Panel Sessions, including 13 presentations with discussions. The topics were ”Disability and Education”, “Construction of Spaces and the Role of the Local”, “Integration and Segregation”, and ”Urbanization and its Problems”.

The panels were followed by an Artist Talk with the artist Marta Beauchamp, who designed the Key Visuals for the Annual Seminar.

The second conference day startet with a Keynote Lecture by Janine Dahinden (University of Neuchâtel) about the topic: The Making of National Societies: Borders, Boundaries and Migrant Inclusion and Exclusion in a Transnational Perspective.
Two panels took place at noon: Migration and Ethicity and Revolution and Nation. In the afternoon, professor. Dr. Rudolf Stichweh hold the third Keynote Lecture of the Annual Seminar. His topic: Inclusion Revolutions and the Emergence of Modernity.

The day ended with guided tours to different places at Bielefeld University: To Niklas Luhmann’s archive, to the Reinhart-Koselleck exhibition in the department of history, and to Hans-Ulrich Wehler’s library.
The last conference day, Saturday, started with two panel sessions with an amount of six presentations, dealing with the broader topics of Labor Market and Working Conditions and Epistemic Dominance.
