Open Science
Open Minds for Open Science
The Open Science Network will launch a seminar for undergraduate students during the forthcoming summer semester, titled “Open Minds for Open Science”
About OSN
The Open Science Network (OSN) Bielefeld, coordinated by Bielefeld Center for Data Science and Bielefeld University Library, is a group of researchers from several faculties that are interested in conducting research that is transparent, reproducible, and trustworthy. Researchers in the network share their experiences, best practices, resources, and tools. In addition, the OSN is involved in a variety of projects at the institution that promote Open Science.
Open Science
Open Science is an interdisciplinary topic of growing importance – even during your studies. There is often little time in everyday research for open science and/or elements such as open access or open data, yet open science is becoming more politically desirable. With the well-founded public demands for transparency in research, efficient use of research funds and disclosure of publicly funded research products (e.g. data, code, etc.) in the background, research funds are increasingly dependent on these conditions.
Why Open Science?
For a growing generation of researchers, understanding the fundamental ideas of Open Science, the problems that Open Science addresses, the sub-topics and methods of Open Science, and the similarities and differences in the Open Science culture between different disciplines will be critical competencies. While young researchers have been informed in the past that investing time in open science was a waste of time for their careers, no researcher will be able to build a career in publically financed research without practicing Open Science in the future. The adage "Open Science is just Science done right!" expresses this sentiment.
What subjects will be discussed at the seminar?
The seminar's weekly schedule approximately follows the research cycle, starting at a research question, experiment planning and conduction, data analysis, to publication. Topics covered include , preregistration, open licensing, finding open access publications and data, data management, open source, version control, infrastructure, data publication, privacy and research data, open access publishing and open educational resources.
Who may benefit from this seminar?
The lecture is intended for all students who are interested in the issue of Open Science, especially those who are thinking about pursuing a career in science. Whether it's by direct participation in research, research financing, science administration, or scientific policy. However, the seminar is equally important for students who are interested in research but do not want to conduct their own study. Understanding how Open Science makes research more visible allows for a much deeper dive into freely released findings.
Who will be in charge of instructing the seminar?
The seminar will be delivered by an interdisciplinary team of lecturers, with a new lecturer leading each session.
Which language will the seminar be taught in?
The seminar will be conducted in German. Due to the international team of lecturers some session might exceptionally be taught in English.
How can I elect the seminar?
The seminar can be elected in the Data Literacy Module and it is not restricted to certain academic programs. In order to attend this seminar you can add the seminar to your EKVV.
When and where will the seminar be held?
From 04/06/2022 until 07/13/2022, the seminar will be held weekly on Wednesdays from 14-16 in X-E1-107.
