NEOLAiA

The NEOLAiA European University Alliance was represented at the NAFSA 2026 Annual Conference & Expo, one of the world’s largest international education events, held on 27–28 May. Through its participation, NEOLAiA contributed to global discussions on the future of higher education, international cooperation, and innovative approaches to university collaboration.

Presenting NEOLAiA on the Global Stage

Representing the alliance were Michaela Vogt and Frescia Andrea Mera Mendoza from the Bielefeld University (Germany), together with Valentin Popa from Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (Romania). The representatives presented a poster introducing the NEOLAiA European University Alliance and highlighting its mission, achievements, and opportunities for students, researchers, academic staff, and administrative personnel.

European University Alliances as Drivers of Cooperation

The poster showcased the European University Initiative as a transformative framework for cooperation in higher education across Europe. By supporting long-term strategies in education, research, and innovation, the initiative enables universities to expand mobility opportunities, strengthen international partnerships, and collaboratively address societal challenges through multidisciplinary approaches. As one of the European University Alliances established under this initiative, NEOLAiA brings together nine young universities from Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Czechia, Romania, Italy, and Cyprus. Since its foundation, the alliance has focused on strengthening internationalisation through mobility, intercultural learning, and institutional cooperation. Its work is guided by three key priorities: digital transformation, inclusion and diversity, and enhanced mobility.

Opportunities for the Entire University Community

During the conference, the NEOLAiA representatives highlighted how the alliance creates meaningful opportunities for the entire university community. Students can engage in international learning experiences through Summer Schools, Focus Academy courses, and Blended Intensive Programmes, gaining new competencies and qualifications while studying in an intercultural environment. Researchers and academic staff benefit from expanded collaboration opportunities, international mobility, and access to innovative teaching and learning platforms. Administrative staff are equally involved through peer-learning activities, exchanges of best practices, and the joint development of institutional processes and structures.

Transforming Regions for a Better Europe

The presentation also emphasised NEOLAiA’s commitment to regional development under its motto, “Transforming Regions for a Better Europe.” By connecting European-level initiatives with local and regional needs, the alliance supports sustainable institutional development while contributing to stronger, more inclusive, and resilient communities across Europe.

Strengthening International Visibility

Participation in NAFSA provided an important opportunity to increase the international visibility of NEOLAiA, exchange experiences with higher education professionals from around the world, and demonstrate the impact of European University Alliances in shaping the future of higher education through cooperation, innovation, and shared values.
