NEOLAiA Scientific Communication Group Lunch Talk: How Can We Spark Students' Interest in Science?
As part of the NEOLAiA Scientific Communication Group, a Lunch Talk was held on the topic "How can we spark students' interest in science?" The session was led by Anna Lorentzon (Örebro University) and Jörg Heeren (Bielefeld University), bringing together members of the alliance to discuss strategies for effective, audience-centred science communication.
The session focused on how scientific content can be communicated in ways that resonate with students. Drawing on practical examples from Örebro University and Bielefeld University, the speakers demonstrated that successful science communication should connect with students' interests, everyday experiences, and campus life. Authentic stories, familiar faces from the university community, and short, accessible social media formats can help make research more engaging and relevant.
Through a range of case studies, the presenters showcased innovative communication approaches, including student research projects, short-form videos, and examples of how current trends and AI-supported content can be used to communicate scientific findings in an engaging and accessible way.
The Lunch Talk provided participants with valuable inspiration for further developing science communication within the NEOLAiA Alliance. It also encouraged an exchange of ideas on how research can become more visible, relatable, and appealing to students.
