Die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung erweitert ihre Fördermöglichkeiten im Rahmen des vom Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (BMFTR) finanzierten „1.000-Köpfe-Plus“-Programms. Mit dem neuen Programmformat „Humboldt Research Professorships“ eröffnet sich deutschen Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen eine attraktive Möglichkeit, herausragende internationale Wissenschaftler*innen langfristig für den Forschungsstandort Deutschland zu gewinnen.

Internationale Spitzenforschende für Deutschland gewinnen

Die Humboldt Research Professorships richten sich an exzellente Wissenschaftler*innen aus dem Ausland, von denen aufgrund ihrer bisherigen außergewöhnlichen, innovativen und risikobereiten Forschungsleistungen auch künftig wissenschaftliche Durchbrüche zu erwarten sind. Ziel ist es, international stark umkämpfte Forschungsfelder mit herausragenden Forscherpersönlichkeiten in Deutschland zu besetzen und diese strukturell weiterzuentwickeln.

Aufnehmende Institutionen profitieren dabei von hohen Gestaltungsfreiheiten bei der Integration der Professorinnen, etwa durch Shared Professorships oder Lab-to-Lab-Professorships. Die geförderten Wissenschaftler*innen können während der Laufzeit ihre Professur oder Arbeitsgruppe im Herkunftsland parallel weiterführen. Gleichzeitig ermöglichen die Förderregularien auch einen vollständigen Wechsel nach Deutschland. Langfristige Bleibeperspektiven – etwa durch eine unbefristete Professur – können im jeweiligen Einzelfall vor Ort verhandelt werden.

Umfangreiche Förderung und flexible Verwendung

Das Preisgeld beträgt

• 1,5 Mio. Euro für theoretisch arbeitende Forschende und
• 3 Mio. Euro für experimentell arbeitende Forschende.

Die Mittel stehen für die Ausstattung der Forschungsvorhaben in Deutschland einschließlich der notwendigen Infrastruktur zur Verfügung. Auch Mittel zur Deckung des Lebensunterhalts in Deutschland oder zur anteiligen Finanzierung einer Professur können daraus verwendet werden.

Zusätzlich erhalten die aufnehmenden Institutionen eine Verwaltungspauschale von 20 % des Preisgeldes zur Deckung personeller und sachlicher Aufwände. Die Förderdauer beträgt fünf Jahre. Bei einem dauerhaften Verbleib in Deutschland kann das Preisgeld unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen um bis zu 500.000 Euro aufgestockt und der Förderzeitraum auf sechs Jahre verlängert werden.

Nominierung und Auswahlverfahren

Nominierungsberechtigt sind alle Hochschulen in Deutschland. Darüber hinaus können Nominierungen auch gemeinsam mit außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen initiiert werden.

Die Ausschreibung läuft bis zum 15. März 2026. Die Auswahl erfolgt in einem zweistufigen Verfahren:

• Im Frühjahr 2026 werden Kandidat*innen für eine Shortlist ausgewählt.
• Die finale Auswahl erfolgt im Oktober 2026 durch einen unabhängigen Auswahlausschuss der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung auf Basis externer Fachbegutachtungen.

Geplant ist die Vergabe von voraussichtlich 20 Humboldt Research Professorships pro Jahr in mindestens drei Auswahlrunden (2026, 2027 und 2028). Die Finanzierung steht derzeit noch unter Vorbehalt.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is expanding its funding opportunities within the “1,000 Heads Plus” programme, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). With the introduction of the new programme format “Humboldt Research Professorships”, German universities and research institutions are offered an attractive opportunity to anchor outstanding international researchers at the German research location on a long-term basis.

Attracting International Top Researchers to Germany

The Humboldt Research Professorships are aimed at exceptional researchers from abroad whose previous work has been extraordinarily successful, innovative, unconventional, and risk-taking, and from whom further scientific breakthroughs can be expected. The programme seeks to strengthen internationally highly competitive research fields in Germany and to support their structural development by recruiting outstanding research personalities.

Host institutions benefit from a high degree of flexibility in integrating the awardees, for example through shared professorships or lab-to-lab professorships. During the funding period, Humboldt Research Professors may continue to hold their own professorship or lead a research group in their country of origin in parallel. At the same time, the funding regulations also allow for a full relocation to Germany. Long-term career perspectives, such as appointment to a permanent professorship, can be negotiated locally on a case-by-case basis.

Substantial Funding and Flexible Use of Funds

The prize money amounts to

• EUR 1.5 million for theoretically oriented researchers and
• EUR 3 million for experimentally oriented researchers.

The funds are provided to support the respective research projects in Germany, including the necessary infrastructure. They may also be used to cover living expenses in Germany or, where applicable, to partially finance a professorship.

In addition, host institutions receive an overhead allowance of 20% of the prize money to cover personnel and material costs. The funding period is five years. In the event that the awardee remains in Germany—such as through appointment to a permanent professorship or a comparable lifetime position—the prize money may, under certain conditions, be increased by up to EUR 500,000, and the funding period extended to six years.

Nomination and Selection Procedure

All universities in Germany are eligible to submit nominations. Nominations may also be initiated jointly with non-university research institutions in Germany.

The call for nominations is open until 15 March 2026. The selection process is carried out in two stages:

• In spring 2026, candidates will be selected for a shortlist.
• The final selection will take place in October 2026 by an independent selection committee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, based on external peer review.

It is planned to award approximately 20 Humboldt Research Professorships per year in at least three selection rounds in 2026, 2027, and 2028. Funding is currently subject to reservation.
