Katja Politt (INF) at the 5th “Methods in Language Sciences” Summer School in Ghent
The Summer School “Methods in Language Sciences” (MILS) caters to (junior and senior) researchers from various scientific disciplines, such as e.g. linguistics, translation and interpreting studies, psycholinguistics and language acquisition research, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics, linguistic ethnography etc. The MILS was for the 5th time organisated by the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University on 14 to 18 June. It was a jam-packed week with 11 multi-day modules on various topics, covering quantitative and qualitative methods, two exciting keynotes, a summer school dinner and a boat trip through the beautiful city. Participants came from all over the world – e.g. from Turkey to Italy, Sweden or China. Participants could choose whether they wanted to take part in one or two courses.
Katja Politt (INF) took the courses in “Eye-tracking” and the “Introduction to Bayesian Statistics”. Both proved to be of great importance to the work in the INF Project, in which guidelines for good research practices within the CRC are developed to ensure effective collaboration between projects and advice is given on methods and statistical analyses. Katja, who took part in the summer school for the second time, can highly recommend the MILS for those eager to try out new methods or software (there were also courses on e.g. PRAAT, NLP with Python, or Linguistic Ethnography)!
