Conference Review: Project C04 organised Workshop on “Interaction Processes and Gesture Research” together with TRR 318 in Paderborn
On July 7th and 8th, the Psycholinguistics Group at Paderborn University hosted a two-day hybrid workshop on interaction processes and gesture research for early-career researchers, organized by Stefan Lazarov (TRR 318, Project A02) and Luyao Wang (CRC 1646, Project C04).
The workshop was initiated in connection with the research visits of Mohamed Irfan (Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven) and Gyulten Hyusein (Department of Psychology, Kadir Has University) to the Psycholinguistics Group at Paderborn University directed by Katharina Rohlfing. To make the most of these visits, researchers from both the CRC 1646 “Linguistic Creativity in Communication” and TRR 318 “Constructing Explainability” working on related topics were brought together to foster discussion, establish new connections, and explore future collaborations.
The workshop opened with a presentation by Mohamed Irfan, who introduced his ongoing doctoral research on interactive approaches to overcoming language barriers in physician–patient interactions. The first day featured studies on how verbal and nonverbal resources facilitate understanding in medical consultations. The second day focused on gesture research and multimodal communication, with presentations covering linguistic creativity, doctor–patient interactions, healthy aging, and preschool children's language production.
