Employees in higher education work in various areas of responsibility - such as research, teaching, knowledge or technology transfer, and academic self government - where decisions are made on a daily basis. In all decision situations, those affected by the decisions (e.g. (academic) staff, students, the staff council or the society) often wonder whether the decisions made are fair. Perceiving decisions as fair is important and desirable as it has multiple positive effects on e.g. one's performance, satisfaction or compliance with rules. Fairness perceptions are shapeable if certain principles are applied thoroughly and consistently. In this contribution, we exemplify the concept of organizational justice and illustrate how to shape fair decisions in the context of higher education.
